Columnist Frank Bruni confessed this week that he could not bring himself to ask his friends if they were voting for Donald Trump. The outspoken liberal said that under normal circumstances, he could hold reasonable conversations with Republicans without losing respect for them. This year, however, Bruni can’t handle the fact that some members of his family might actually vote for The Donald.
“One of my relatives routinely pushes back at any Trump-negative columns I write, and I’ve convinced myself that he’s just baiting me and playing devil’s advocate,” writes Bruni. “I’ve never said to him, point blank, ‘Are you actually voting for Trump?’ And I won’t. It’s my goal to get to and through Election Day without learning the truth.’
According to Bruni, there’s simply no way to respect a Trump supporter. “Friends have asked me about the leanings of other friends, because they shudder to find out for themselves,” he writes.
Sounds like you have some inter-familial issues to take care of that have little to do with the Republican nominee.
“There will be epic ugliness in the foreground of this election,” Bruni predicts. “But pockets of silence in the background will be just as unsettling because they’ll reflect a despair and bafflement beyond words.”
To quote Herman Cain, this guy’s been drinking the Fool-Aid.
Bruni’s problems with Trump are the usual ones – mostly rooted in his absolute defiance of political correctness. He’s certainly not upset about the liberal tendencies that have concerned some Republican voters. And he can’t make his point if he admits that his real problem is with Trump’s conservative proposals. So he brings up the John McCain thing and the disabled reporter thing and bases his whole argument off of that.
Which, okay. Trump is a little outrageous. What of it? Are we seriously going to compare a few off-color comments to the systematic, decades-long history of treachery and scandal that have defined the Clintons? Wouldn’t you rather have a president who occasionally says something cringe-worthy than a president who occasionally leaks national security secrets to the world’s hacking community?
Well, not Bruni. He just can’t deal with it.
It’s gonna be a long four years for people like him…
