Every once in a while, a Hollywood has-been will make a remark on television that is so brilliant that you wonder why they wasted their genius on acting when they could have been making a real difference in the world. Rob Reiner, best known to TV audiences as the hippie foil to Carroll O’Conner in the 1970s sitcom “All in the Family,” is not one of those celebrities. Every time he says something in an interview, his IQ is exposed as having dropped since the last time he said something in an interview. We’re not sure how this numbskull managed to direct great movies like “Stand By Me” and “Misery,” but we assume that he had a lot of help.
This week, Reiner appeared on MSNBC to explain that we’re in the midst of a modern Civil War and that Trump is 2020’s answer to Confederate President Jefferson Davis.
“Well, this election is going to come down to six or eight states, as you know, Wisconsin being one of them — key battleground state, and we have to win it. We lost it last time, and we have to win it this time,” Reiner said. “You know, you were talking earlier, and you’ve been talking throughout the show about this is a fight for democracy versus white supremacy. You’ve been saying this over and over. And that’s true. I believe that is 100% true.
“The problem we have now is that when we had this Civil War back in the 1860s, we had Abraham Lincoln in the White House,” he continued. “Now we’ve got Jefferson Davis in the White House, and so it’s very scary the idea that we are engaging in this modern-day civil war and we have the president who now controls the levers of government. That’s my fear.”
Good lord, this is why no one with any sense takes accusations of “white supremacy” seriously anymore. When you stretch the definition of racism to the point that President Trump’s America is on par with the Slavery South, you’ve lost everyone other than the deeply, irrevocably deranged. Granted, that describes quite a few leftists these days.
“We’re going to get turnout, just the volume of votes we’re going to get between 5 and 7 million more votes, I believe then Trump, but the problem is, he controls all the levers of government,” Reiner said, drifting from point to point like a pinball. “He’s perverted all of the agents, whether it’s the Justice Department, State Department, Homeland Security, even our Health Departments, to the point where I’m frightened he is going to try to do anything to pervert this election he stole last time with the help of the Russians. But this time, he is doing it on steroids because he has— he controls the government.”
To paraphrase Roger Ebert’s review of the Reiner-directed movie “North”: We hated, hated, hated, hated, hated this rant. Try harder, Rob.
