Inspired to change the world by the coronavirus outbreak, more than 200 Hollywood stars (and a handful of scientists) signed onto an editorial this week, urging the leaders and people of the world to pursue a “radical transformation” of our economies and values.
The actors and actresses, including Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Jane Fonda, and more of the exact stars you would expect to sign on to a document like this, say that if we miss the chance to reform in the wake of the pandemic, we will witness the “massive extinction of life on Earth.”
Well, okay then. As long as you’re not overhyping it or anything…
Published in Le Monde, a French newspaper, the editorial said that the coronavirus was an opportunity for humans to “examine what is essential” in our lives and realize that “all indicators point to a direct existential threat.”
“The ongoing ecological catastrophe is a meta-crisis: the massive extinction of life on Earth is no longer in doubt, and all indicators point to a direct existential threat. Unlike a pandemic, however severe, a global ecological collapse will have immeasurable consequences,” they write. “We therefore solemnly call upon leaders — and all of us as citizens – to leave behind the unsustainable logic that still prevails and to undertake a profound overhaul of our goals, values, and economies.”
“The pursuit of consumerism and an obsession with productivity have led us to deny the value of life itself: that of plants, that of animals, and that of a great number of human beings,” they continue. “Pollution, climate change, and the destruction of our remaining natural zones has brought the world to a breaking point.”
Like many leftists, these Hollywood actors are using the coronavirus as some kind of strange “proof” of the arguments they’ve been making all along. Namely, that the world will be destroyed by rising temperatures over the next few decades unless we all switch to wind energy or some such thing. Namely, that we have to put all of our resources towards making sure the U.S. and the Western white world is as diverse as possible. Namely (and most importantly) that we need to stop allowing people to pursue unlimited success in the free market and start putting government in control of our lives.
“For these reasons, along with increasing social inequalities, we believe it is unthinkable to ‘go back to normal,’” they conclude.
Someone should figure out how much carbon we’re spewing into the atmosphere so Hollywood can keep churning out their trash.
