Muslim Assimilation Just Isn’t Happening
Liberal Muslim apologists are beginning – slowly but surely – to wake up to the folly of their ways. Notably, Trevor Phillips, the erstwhile head of the UK’s Equalities and Human Rights Commission, has admitted that he was wrong to believe that Muslims could smoothly assimilate into European culture.
“For a long time,” Phillips wrote, “I thought that Muslims would become like previous waves of migrants, gradually abandoning their ancestral ways, wearing their religious and cultural baggage lightly, and gradually blending into Britain’s diverse identity landscape. I should have known better.”
Phillips, who was one of the first Western leaders to attack nationalist conservatives as “Islamophobic,” has seen what has happened in countries like his own. Instead of melting into the pot, Muslims have created little independent fiefdoms of culture, unwilling to embrace the norms of their host countries. Quite the contrary, in fact, they want their host countries to change their laws and customs so they are more in line with Islamic thought.
“Liberal opinion in Britain has, for more than two decades, maintained that most Muslims are just like everyone else,” Phillips wrote. “But thanks to the most detailed and comprehensive survey of British Muslim opinion yet conducted, we now know that just isn’t how it is.”
Phillips refers to a recent poll that revealed some troubling beliefs among British Muslims. 52% want homosexuality made illegal. 39% believe that a woman must always obey her husband. 31% believe that a man is entitled to more than one wife. 23% want to see sharia law supplant current British law.
These opinions should be especially disturbing to anyone who considers themselves a social liberal, a fact Phillips concedes. “Some of my journalist friends imagine that, with time, the Muslims will grow out of it,” he wrote. “They won’t.”
They won’t…doesn’t quite say it. The truth is that Muslims are growing more insular, more extreme, and more hostile to Western culture. Which is fine. Believe whatever you want. Enjoy Saudi Arabia. The problem is that they want to infect our culture with theirs. And, whether they are terrified of terrorism or brainwashed by “every culture is wonderful” liberalism, our leaders refuse to do anything about it.
Those poll numbers, save the one about homosexuality, make it clear that these are minority opinions in the British Muslim community. The liberals are right – this isn’t about all Muslims. But when they say it, they make it sound like there is ISIS – and then there’s all the “good” Muslims. The above answers may be minority opinions, but it’s a healthy minority. Not something to be ignored and swept under the rug.
It’s not racist, xenophobic, or bigoted to preserve a way of life we’ve developed over the last 6,000 years. Muslims may have plenty to offer the Western world, but Islam does not. We need world leaders who will make that clear.
