In the clearest sign yet that Donald Trump is in conflict with the U.S. intelligence community, the president-elect bashed CIA Director John Brennan on Twitter this weekend. Trump didn’t initiate the attack, but it is obvious that he’s losing patience with those in the Obama administration who seem dedicated to watching him fail.
Brennan, on Fox News Sunday, kicked off the feud by questioning whether Trump was seeing Russia through the proper lens.
“I don’t think he has a full understanding of Russian capabilities and the actions they are taking on the world,” Brennan said.
He went on to say that Trump may lack a “full appreciation” of Russian hostility.
“Mr. Trump has to understand that absolving Russia is a road that he needs to be very, very careful about moving down,” Brennan said.
Trump, who is not known for his ability to calmly ponder criticism – especially when it comes in a public forum – responded Sunday afternoon:
@FoxNews “Outgoing CIA Chief, John Brennan, blasts Pres-Elect Trump on Russia threat. Does not fully understand.” Oh really, couldn’t do much worse – just look at Syria (red line), Crimea, Ukraine and the build-up of Russian nukes. Not good! Was this the leaker of Fake News?

While there’s no evidence that Brennan was behind the “dossier” that was published on BuzzFeed last week, there is also little reason for Trump to let Obama’s CIA chief tear him apart on cable television. It’s obvious that Brennan’s loyalties lie with President Obama. That’s all well and good, but his loyalties should lie with the country – not the Democratic administration. And the country needs him to stop warring with the man who will be president in just a few short days.
As an aside, Brennan is not immune from sharp criticism, either. And it’s not just what Trump mentioned on Twitter. Brennan has been one of the top architects of the Barack Obama Theory of Terrorism – a theory that says ISIS is not Islamic…but rather a gang of criminals who are using Islam as an excuse to murder, rape, and pillage. This theory is one of the primary reasons why this administration has been so impotent in the war on terror.
The Democrat/Republican establishment is only one of the monsters standing in Trump’s way; the intelligence community has an agenda of their own. And like the politicians, those spies are going to resist change to the last, bitter minute.
Trump has his work cut out for him.
