Facebook has been under sharp criticism in recent months about its ability to provide a safe forum for conservative thought. Like Google, YouTube, Instagram, and Twitter, the social media giant has been grilled by Congress and bashed by right-leaning commentators for failing to call it down the middle. You would think, given all of this external pressure, that Facebook would go out of its way to prove that it can serve as a fair field for all political ideas. But you would be wrong.
This week, Facebook announced they were creating a “Civil Rights Task Force” that would monitor the company’s departments to make sure “civil rights concerns raised by outside groups are escalated promptly to decision-makers so that they can be considered and acted on quickly.” Hmm-hmm. Okay, well that doesn’t sound all that bad, we suppose. One likes to think that people will have their civil rights guarded while working at or posting on Facebook. Good to know, good to know.
The problem, though, comes in the kinds of groups that Facebook is partnering with to create this task force: The ACLU and 90 other anonymous organizations that are undoubtedly biased against conservative expression.
The task force began by insisting that Facebook engage in even more strict censorship than it already has. This includes removing “hate speech,” removing even humor that can be construed as an attack on a protected group, and banning anyone who is a “self-described or identified follower of a hateful ideology.” Now think about what people say about Focus on the Family. What they say about Frederick Graham. What they say about President Trump. A knitting forum just banned any support of Trump from their site because they claim it is indistinguishable from “white supremacy.” Can Facebook be far behind?
“Sheryl Sandberg just announced that she is allowing the ACLU and 90 left-wing organizations to dictate nearly every aspect of Facebook’s policies,” said Media Research Center founder Brent Bozell. “This will let the left dominate the most powerful social media platform on the face of the earth. That raises significant legal and statutory issues that should worry both left and right.”
Oh, it won’t worry the left in the slightest. They are all about censorship as long as it is their opposition getting censored. They are no longer “liberals” in any classic sense of the word. They are full-fledged mini-totalitarians who want to eradicate anything or anyone that disagrees with their ideology. Unfortunately, they are on the clear path to making that dream a reality.
