Supreme Court Conservative May Soon Retire
If Republicans know what’s good for them, they will begin framing the 2016 election in the terms that really matter for the future of the United States. Because regardless of what you may think of Donald Trump as a person or a candidate – regardless of what you may think of his proposals or his manner of speech – he will almost certainly nominate conservatives to the Supreme Court. And when you cut through all the chaff, that may be the single biggest reason to go out and vote this November.
Because there’s no question what kind of Justices Hillary Clinton will appoint if given the opportunity. Even if she only gets one pick – to fill the seat vacated by the late Antonin Scalia – it will give us a majority-liberal Court and have dire ramifications for years to come. If she gets two, the situation could go from unfortunate to dire. More than that, and we could see this country change in fundamental ways that could forever plot the course for generations to come.
This week, Paul Bedard of the Washington Examiner reported that Justice Clarence Thomas, one of the Court’s most reliably conservative votes, is contemplating retirement. That would give Hillary her two picks, and it would give the Supreme Court a 6-3 liberal majority. Bedard mentioned that Justice Anthony Kennedy may also be nearing retirement; he will celebrate his 80th birthday next year. That’s three, and it would give the Court a 7-2 liberal majority, assuming that Clinton gets to pick their replacements.
If our country survived two terms of President Obama, we can probably survive just about any Democrat in the White House. But there’s a difference between surviving bad foreign and domestic policy and surviving a huge Supreme Court ideological shift. Hillary Clinton’s liberal Court could remain dominant long after we’ve forgotten the bad policies of her presidency.
Over the next few years, the Supreme Court could easily make decisions regarding the Second Amendment, immigration policy, the extent of the president’s power, abortion, religious freedom, and more. The wrong decisions could alter our way of life drastically.
If you haven’t been able to bring yourself to support Trump up until now, forget about voting for him in November. Put it out of your mind. When you step up to the ballot box, vote for a conservative Supreme Court. This election is simply too important for any conservative to stay home.
