The liberal media has done an excellent job ignoring the deep fractures that the 2016 election exposed in the Democratic Party, but those divisions haven’t disappeared. That was made plain this week when supporters of Sen. Bernie Sanders went ballistic on the Democratic Party’s establishment wing after a lawsuit they filed against the DNC was dismissed by a federal judge. The class action suit, which alleged that the DNC gave illegal favoritism to establishment candidate Hillary Clinton, was thrown out on Friday – much to the angry chagrin of outraged liberals.
Thanks to the DNC email hack, Democrats got an inside view of the party’s political machinations last year and they didn’t exactly give voters trust in the process. In fact, many emails demonstrated just how in the tank the party was for Clinton – favoritism that came at the expense of the populist Sanders and his ultra-left wing agenda. But while that favoritism is undeniable to anyone who read the emails (or, frankly, anyone who simply watched the primaries last year), Judge William Zloch decided that it was not blatant enough to warrant legal action.
“To the extent plaintiffs wish to air their general grievances with the DNC or its candidate selection process, their redress is through the ballot box, the DNC’s internal workings, or their right of free speech — not through the judiciary,” Zloch wrote in his 28-page opinion on the case. “To the extent plaintiffs have asserted specific causes of action grounded in specific factual allegations, it is this court’s emphatic duty to measure plaintiffs’ pleadings against existing legal standards.”
On the Facebook page dedicated to following the lawsuit, disgruntled Democrats blasted the decision while taking solace in the fact that Zloch did not deny the blatant bias against their candidate. Indeed, the judge wrote that “in evaluating plaintiffs’ claims at this stage, the court assumes their allegations are true — that the DNC and Wasserman Schultz held a palpable bias in favor [of] Clinton and sought to propel her ahead of her Democratic opponents.”
One Facebook user said that the suit had accomplished its purpose just by getting the DNC to admit in court that “they didn’t have to play fair or even follow their own guidelines.”
“They admitted they are crooks and they will NEVER see another dime of my money,” said another angry Bernie supporter.
Division like this is the last thing the party needs at a time when they are falling WAY behind Republicans on fundraising efforts. Bernie-Dems are leaving the party in droves, convinced that the DNC has no interest in their progressive agenda. Meanwhile, the only thing that unites the left is a hatred for President Donald Trump – a hatred that drives ratings…but not donations.
If the party can’t bridge the gap soon, 2018 may deliver Democrats their final, killing blow.
