Count on House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi to keep the train of identity politics rolling, no matter how much harm it does to her party or the nation as a whole. Convinced that there will be political gain in store for Democrats if they can just keep telling America how utterly racist Donald Trump is, Pelosi and friends keep hammering the same drum that lost them the 2016 election.
We’d like to imagine that at some point the left will wake up and realize that this “minorities vs. whites” narrative is not going to work, but then we realize they have nothing else to fall back on. Their economic message sucks. Everything else is wrapped up in identity politics. The only thing they have is “Down With Whitey” and “Down With Trump.” And usually, the two are combined to make a sludgy kind of stew.
In a speech to the U.S. Conference of Mayors last week, Pelosi said that the president’s immigration policies (which include compelling mayors to, you know, actually obey federal law) was rooted in nothing more than racism.
“Last night the president put forth a plan,” Pelosi said. “Let me just say what I said last night: That plan is a campaign to make America white again. It is plan that says over 50 percent of the current legal immigration will be cut back, that many people will be sent out of the country.
“If you read through it you are thinking: Do they not understand that immigration has been the constant reinvigoration of America?” Pelosi wondered. “People come here with their hopes and dreams and aspirations and their optimism and their courage to make the future better for their families. They are honoring our Founders, who predicated on everything they do, every generation would make the future better for the next. And with those same values, these newcomers make America more American.”
That all sounds very nice and rosy, but it doesn’t make a lot of sense if you look at the facts of America’s economic decline over the last three decades. Newsflash, Nancy: Wages are stagnant, crime is up, and the middle class is getting the shaft. And that’s not even getting into what illegal immigration has done to entry-level workers, many of whom are minorities. You remember minorities, right, Nancy? The people who make up the base of your party? Or are you planning to win future elections with illegal immigrant votes alone? Good luck with that.
There’s nothing wrong with immigration as a concept, and President Trump has never argued otherwise. But there comes a point where it is prudent for us to take a step back, let the people who are here assimilate, and then see what we’ve got. That’s what Trump is calling for, and it is completely sensible. It has nothing at all to do with racism, and Pelosi damn well knows it.
