21% of Americans Would Contribute to Border Wall Fund
Can you name another political project to which one-fifth of the American public would personally contribute money out of their own pocket to fund? Yes, of course, all taxpayers contribute to all federal projects in one sense, but according to a new Rasmussen survey, 21% of likely U.S. voters would gladly pay towards the construction of a wall across the southern U.S. border. That should speak volumes about how serious a certain number of voters are about strengthening this country’s security.
This survey comes at a time when it seems less likely than ever that Congress is going to give President Trump the money he needs to get started on the wall in a serious fashion. Democrats are digging their heels in against handing over the $5 billion the White House is asking for, and the White House is now signaling that they will not shut down the government over the issue.
But if Democrats believe they have public support on their side, they may want to take another look at the polls. While Nancy Pelosi is out there calling the wall “immoral” and “inefficient,” 10% of Democrat voters (!) say they would personally help pay for the wall! That’s to say nothing of the 34% of Republican voters who would do it. And Republican voters are the LEAST likely to want their hard-earned money going to a government project, so that number is actually more astonishing then it seems on the surface.
Broadly speaking, of course, the majority of voters do not want to pay a dime more in income tax to help fight illegal immigration. 56% said they were not willing to pay an increase in taxes to fund the wall.
All of this is somewhat politically-muddled, of course. The wall has come to stand for TRUMP, which causes liberals to lose their minds. Even those on the Democrat side who think their own party is out of touch when it comes to securing the border will probably vote “no” on the wall, simply because it’s such a signature issue for the president.
In a tweet on Monday, President Trump attempted to put more pressure on Democrats.
“The Democrats are saying loud and clear that they do not want to build a Concrete wall – but we are not building a Concrete Wall, we are building artistically-designed steel slats, so that you can easily see through it,” he wrote. “It will be beautiful and, at the same time, give our Country the security that our citizens deserve. It will go up fast and save us BILLIONS of dollars a month once completed!”
Which all sounds great, except for the fact that it remains unfunded…and thus will never be completed. Not until this president finds a way to either force Democrats to the table, or finds an alternative source of funding.
Hey, 21% of Americans are apparently ready to open up their wallets.
