7-Year-Old Called “Little Hitler” After Raising Money for The Wall
Just take a look at this first paragraph from CBS-Austin:
A 7-year-old boy is facing backlash after some neighbors in his northwest Austin community took offense to a hot chocolate stand he started to raise money for President Donald Trump’s proposed border wall.
Really? A 7-year-old boy is “facing backlash?” That’s how you choose to frame the story? We’re not even sure that the local CBS station in Austin, Texas qualifies as part of the liberal mainstream media, but how clueless do you have to be to write a lede like that? Is there any doubt that if the politics were reversed, it would be the neighbors taking heat for giving this kid any guff?
Actually, that wouldn’t even be the story. If this kid was raising money for Planned Parenthood or transgender illegal immigrants, he would be hailed a hero by the media and featured in his own “Today Show” story. They’d ask one question about the “backlash,” and the kid would pull some heartwarming quote out of thin air, and that would close the story. They’d come back to the studio and Savannah Guthrie would smile, tears glistening in her eyes. “The future of America,” she’d say in a hoarse voice before cutting to commercial.
But since Benton Stevens was out there on the street selling hot chocolate for such an evil, despicable, racist cause as THE WALL, the news is only interested in telling the story from the neighbors’ side of it – a story that includes passersby referring to the kid as “Little Hitler.”
To be completely honest, we’ve never been crazy about politically-opinionated kids regardless of which side of the spectrum their stance falls, but in this case, Benton’s parents seem to have a pretty good grip on the situation. His father, Shane, told the news that while he wasn’t thrilled with the reaction his son was getting from some of the liberals in the area, he thought even that might provide a learning experience for his son.
“If he’s going to do it, he needs to learn that there’s going to be a little backlash,” Shane Stevens said. “But I just wish they would do it in a little more respectful, adult-like manner.”
Yeah, well, that’s probably asking too much of the Austin liberal crowd.
In any event, we have to applaud this kid’s ability to withstand the mockery of his neighbors and stand up for what he believes is right. One’s politics usually undergo some changes as they get older, but the media and Benton’s adult role models in the area may have already guaranteed that this young boy will never go all the way to the dark side. After all, why would you ever want to align yourself with people who think it’s okay to attack a 7-year-old for supporting the president?
