ABC News Liberals: It’s “Critical” That Senate GOP Punish Trump
Having finally given up hope that the Senate would convict President Donald Trump on the weak impeachment articles sent over by the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives, the anchors and liberal pundits on ABC News began to fervently demand Monday that Senate Republicans at least punish the president with a censure.
“There’s an intellectually consistent position to take on that which is, that you can take the position that it was wrong but that he shouldn’t be removed from office over it,” said legal analyst Dan Abrams. “And that to me is the only fight remaining, which is are they going to get — you want to talk about impeachment, having a stamp, a permanent branding on him, I don’t know that that has it. If you have enough Republican senators saying it was wrong, that’s more of a brand. That’s more of a deterrent to him doing it again.”
Senior correspondent Terry Moran asked the others on the panel if there was any willingness within the Republican caucus to bring censure against the president.
“So who’s going to go on a limb and do what we’re talking about?” he asked. “Which Republicans out there are willing to take this to the public and to the official record for history, what he did was wrong, what he did was inappropriate and I want to state that on the record. You’re going to get punished if you do that, yeah?”
Moran turned to congressional reporter Mary Bruce to ask if it wouldn’t be possible for Republicans to choose this lesser punishment to teach Trump right from wrong.
“On the question, look we’re talking about something that the president has done that warrants conviction and removal from office versus something he’s done that’s wrong but doesn’t deserve that punishment,” Moran said. “That sounds like a case for censure in a normal Senate maybe. You hear any whispers of anything like that? That senators are saying, ‘well, you know, let’s lay it on the record in a formal way, let’s have a censure of the president for this conduct.’”
Bruce confirmed, without evidence, that Republican senators were “looking for some way to voice their displeasure” with the president.
Well, of course, there will be no censure. There will be no conviction. Liberals are scrambling because they finally realize what a terrible corner Nancy Pelosi painted the Democrats into. Now the time is upon us – the exoneration and subsequent victory lap that EVERYONE knew was coming from the moment impeachment was announced. House Democrats tried every trick in the book to keep this inevitable moment from arising, but there’s no getting around it. It’s here.
And if Trump takes special pleasure in crushing the 2020 Dems with their own impeachment? Well, you know what they say: If you come for the king, you’d better not miss.
