Adam Carolla: In California, We “Turned Cops Into the Bad Guys”
In an interview with Tucker Carlson on Monday, comedian Adam Carolla lamented the state of California under nonstop liberal Democrat rule, telling the Fox News host that the politicians in Sacramento have no concern for the poor because they can’t get any money out of them for their campaigns.
“They would care if they owe them money and they had money and they could get money from them,” Carolla told Carlson. “They care greatly about people who have checkbooks, but they’ve really divided the entire city into those who pay and those who can’t. And if you can’t, they’re not that interested.”
Asked about the homelessness crisis that is rapidly destroying once-great cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles, Carolla said that it’s the middle class that’s really getting the shaft from the current policies.
“If you’re Barbra Streisand, what do you care about a speeding ticket?” Carolla said. “And if you’re ultra-poor, you’re untouchable because you can’t get blood out of a turnip. You know, there’s nothing there. There’s none. You can’t pay them. It’s the middle who gets the crap kicked out of them here in Los Angeles. So we have a million rules for those who play by the rules, and we have no rules for those who have no money and don’t play by the rules.”
Carolla said that part of the problem lies in the misconception that there is something inhumane about enforcing the law.
“What changed is we started to mistake discipline in rule of law for being mean. This sort of like, don’t be mean,” Carolla said. “‘Don’t take that homeless guy. Why are you making him go here or why are you arresting him or why are you incarcerating him or why are you putting me in this facility?'”
Carolla said this backwards thinking had turned the culture upside down.
“We’re turning on the teachers, the coaches, the governors, the mayors, the cops,” he said. “I think what we’ve done with cops, we turned cops into the bad guy.”
Carolla is one of the few celebrities to have a halfway-rational view of the world, and he’s pretty dead-on in assessing what ails his home state. Sacramento Democrats spend half of their time worrying about the optics of cracking down on the homeless and illegal immigrants, and they spend the other half catering to the technobrats of Silicon Valley and the rest of the ultra-rich.
The people that get screwed are the middle and working class, and that’s why they are fleeing the state in record numbers.
