(RestoreAmericanGlory.com) – On Wednesday, Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.) was taken into custody after being indicted on 13 federal charges over accusations that he had lied about his finances to federal agencies and the public, as well as misled donors.

The specific charges against Santos include seven counts of wire fraud, three counts of money laundering, one count of theft of public funds, and two counts of making materially false statements to the House of Representatives.

On Wednesday afternoon, Santos pleaded not guilty and was released on a $500,000 bond until his next appearance in court on June 30 before U.S. District Judge Joanna Seybert. Seybert has been serving in court since her nomination by former President Clinton in 1993.

Santos’s surrender came only one day after it was reported that federal prosecutors had filed criminal charges against him. The indictment had originally remained sealed until Wednesday.

U.S. Attorney Breon Peace noted in his statement that the indictments against Santos show a pattern of “dishonesty and deception” used by the representative in order to climb through Congress and gain wealth for himself. Peace added that Santos used political contributions to enrich himself, “unlawfully applied for unemployment benefits,” and “lied to the House of Representatives.”

For months, the New York Republican has faced criticism after it was revealed that he had previously lied about his background and resume. The House Ethics Committee also launched a probe into him in March.

Many lawmakers from both parties have called for his resignation, while others, like Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-Texas), have said that he should be expelled.
