(RestoreAmericanGlory.com) – On Friday, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) stated that he was going to repeal the criminal justice reform bill that had been signed into law by former President Donald Trump if he wins the White House.

In an appearance on “The Ben Shapiro Show,” DeSantis slammed the First Step Act, a bipartisan bill passed in 2018 that cut down mandatory minimum sentences, expanded credits for well-behaved prisoners who were trying to get shorter sentences, and looked to reduce recidivism.

Only days after DeSantis launched his presidential campaign for 2024 on Wednesday, he claimed that this particular legislation was essentially “a jailbreak bill.” He added that as President, one of the things that he was going to ask Congress to do would be to “repeal the First Step Act.” DeSantis claimed that those who ended up in jail needed to serve time and that there was no point in releasing people early before their rehabilitation was completed, just so they could prey on other members of society.

DeSantis had voted in favor of an initial draft of the House version of the bill during his time in Congress in 2018. However, he had resigned to run for governor by the time the final version of the bill was being voted on. The changes between the drafts resulted in the bill passed in 2018 being more moderate than the one DeSantis had voted in favor of.

Trump signed the First Step Act into law in December 2018, claiming it would help increase safety and would provide those who have earned it with a second chance.
