GOP Office Firebombed: “Nazi Republicans” Targeted
A GOP office in North Carolina was firebombed this weekend by an unknown assailant who, in addition to lighting the place on fire, spray painted a message to the building’s tenants: “Nazi Republicans get out of town or else.” The message was accompanied by a swastika.
In a statement, officials from Hillsborough, N.C. said, “The flammable substance appears to have ignited inside the building, burned some furniture and damaged the building’s interior before going out. The substance was housed in a bottle thrown through one of the building’s front windows.”
As of now, no suspects have been identified. On Monday, the Hillsborough Police Department released a statement saying they were working with the FBI and other federal and state law enforcement agencies to track down the perpetrators.
“This highly disturbing act goes far beyond vandalizing property; it willfully threatens our community’s safety via fire, and its hateful message undermines decency, respect and integrity in civic participation,” said the town’s mayor, Tom Stevens.
As you might expect, Donald Trump went a little further than that.
“Animals representing Hillary Clinton and Dems in North Carolina just firebombed our office in Orange County because we are winning @NCGOP,” Trump tweeted.
Trump has made it his unofficial policy to make claims before all the evidence is in, but you have to admit that he’s usually right. And even law enforcement officials admit that the perpetrators were likely enraged by Trump’s campaign rhetoric. The media will be happy to run with that narrative. Not because it makes Hillary’s supporters look like crazed lunatics, but because they can turn around and indirectly blame Trump himself for the firebombing. What else can you expect when you say all of these racist things?
Naturally, the only one who deserves the true blame for this attack is whoever was directly involved. But if you want to start talking about secondary culpability, don’t look at Trump – look at the mainstream media. They’re the ones that have built Trump up to be this 21st century fascist. They’re the ones that have unironically compared him to Hitler time and again. They’re the ones who have played that “Mexico is sending rapists…” clip on repeat for more than a year.
You can’t fan these flames every day for 16 months without inspiring a few crazies to take matters into their own hands.
