Gowdy on Dems Calling on AG Barr to Resign: “Dumbest Damn Thing” I’ve Heard
In an interview with Fox News this week, former House Oversight Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy gave a metaphorical eyeroll to those Democrats calling on Attorney General William Barr to resign. While acknowledging that he wasn’t thrilled with President Trump putting his thumb on the scale when it came to the sentencing recommendations against Roger Stone, Gowdy said that it was absurd to think that Barr buckled under pressure from the White House.
“I’ve had the same position whether it was Barack Obama or Donald Trump: I do not think the chief executive should be weighing in ongoing investigations or criminal prosecutions,” Gowdy said. “I can tell you this: Bill Barr was aware of this recommendation before President Trump ever tweeted a single syllable, a single character. So the notion that Barr was somehow motivated to move because of this tweet is just factually wrong.
Indeed, Gowdy continued, “The notion that Barr should resign is about the dumbest damn thing I’ve ever heard.”
He said that Democrat senators calling on Barr to resign should familiarize themselves with the workings of the federal government.
“If a United States Senator really believes that the head of the Department of Justice cannot weigh in on what a proportional sentence is,” he said in disbelief. “There are child pornographers, people who rob banks who do not get nine years.”
Ultimately, Gowdy said, the judge in Stone’s case would be the final arbiter when it comes to deciding how long the political consultant should spend behind bars.
“Let the judge decide,” he said. “I think two or three years is about right.”
We’re no longer surprised when the left throws a collective tantrum over anything that President Trump does, but this one was sillier than most. You have Democrats saying that the “rule of law” is forever broken; we’ve even heard a few saying that a second impeachment might be in order. Come off it. The sentence recommendations against Stone were absolutely absurd – Mueller-driven retribution under the guise of justice. Whether or not it was “appropriate” for Trump to remark on it, it was completely appropriate for Barr to demand that the recommendations be adjusted.
Besides, as Gowdy notes, none of this has anything to do with the judge’s final decision. She is free to sentence Stone as she sees fit.
Democrats are desperate to convince us that we’re slipping into some authoritarian nightmare version of America. Sadly, their constant Boy-Who-Cried-Wolf routine is going to make it very difficult for Americans to detect true fascism if and when it ever comes to our shores.
