Has The Senate Finally Voted To Make Daylight Savings Time Permanent?

It seems that our hopelessly divided legislation can agree on one thing – changing the clocks every year sucks!

In a rare unopposed vote, the Senate has voted to make Daylight Savings Time permanent. The measure now goes to the House.

The bill, called The Sunshine Protection Act, was passed by unanimous consent, meaning no senators opposed it. If it is enacted, Americans would no longer need to change their clocks twice a year.

“We got it past the Senate, and now the clock is ticking to get the job done, so we never have to switch our clocks again,” Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., said on the Senate floor. “So, I urge my colleagues in the House to act as swiftly as the Senate — let’s get this bill on President Biden’s desk and deliver more sunshine to Americans across the country.”

Daylight saving time started in the US in 1918 to create more daylight hours during warmer months. It was extended by four weeks starting in 2007. States are not required to follow daylight saving time — Hawaii, and most of Arizona do not observe it.

Under the legislation, states with areas exempt from daylight saving time would be permitted to choose standard time for those areas.

“It’s time for Congress to take up our bipartisan legislation to make Daylight Saving Time permanent and brighten the coldest months with an extra hour of afternoon sun,” Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., a co-sponsor of the legislation, said in a tweet.

Whitehouse reintroduced the measure last week with Sens. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., James Lankford, R-Okla., Roy Blunt, R-Mo., Ron Wyden, D-Ore., Cindy Hyde-Smith, R-Miss., Rick Scott, R-Fla., and Ed Markey, D-Mass.

The bill now heads to the House, where passage would send it to President Joe Biden’s desk. Daylight saving time began Sunday, Mar. 6, and lasts until Nov. 6.

Wouldn’t it be nice if you never again had to remember if it was “spring forward or fall back?”

Standard time is natures time, sun is bad for the skin, Just don’t want DLS time at all, the whole country is never consulted!

My comment is that in some areas kids may wind up leaving for school IN THE DARK in a few areas.
Has this been considered in making this decision?

The last several years has shown us our law makers don’t think/consider much o9f anything.

They go out and play in the dark don’t they? Whats the difference?

So, why is this a problem? I had to be out waiting for the bus early in the morning when I was in grade school, which often meant being out there in the dark during the winter months. A little dark never hurt anybody. Folks who are worried about it need to make sure their munchkins are wearing reflective stripes or light colored clothing.

I would suggest the children go to school later in the day and stay longer to get out closer to the parents clock out time. Fewer latch key kids as well. Schools need to become a 9 to 4 operation 52 weeks per year.No homework, all done in school. Just another workday with arrangements made to vacation when the parents want, instead of the teachers unions.

It is OK for the southern states, but a pain in the rear the farther north you go. I don’t think a lot of people want to trade an extra hour of daylight (and usually NOT sunshine) for snow blowing drives and sidewalks and sending kids to school in the dark. Also will screw up times with Canada and Mexico who observe DST.

No! It’s artificial and a stupid idea. Those who believe in it are fooling themselves. Standard Time is the correct time.

I have no problem in setting the clock the same ALL year But it SHOULD be STANDARD time not Day light saving time which is NOT healthy for anyone

excellent article where this was tried back in the 70s and failed. I pray the house rejects it. Obviously the senate does not learn from history

They are doing it every year when they change the time now. And in Missouri, the buses are out picking up children before the sun comes up now all winter. Nobody would know the difference. I have my choice of going to work when the sun comes up, but have to go home in the dark during winter.

Daylight Savings Time (DST) does not give the day more than 24 hours. Longer daylight play time equals less nighttime sleep time. It causes children to have to be at bus stops in the dark and go to bed in the light. Many workers have to leave for and begin work in the dark. Our biological clocks and circadian body rhythms are based on the rising and setting of the sun. DST puts a physiological strain on our bodies by causing us to against our nature. If people want more time to play after work, let them and bosses start their workday and hour earlier and end an hour earlier. Don’t make the rest of us have to suffer for it.

Some states have been doing this for years. In the northern part of the country, the day light is so short that it’s dark when kids go to or from school.

There are so many problems in the Country that this should never have been even brought up. Time is time. You can not change time. When its 4pm iys 4pm. You can set your clock at the time you want it to be but that forsnt make it the correct time. At 5 in the afternoon o could set your clock at 2pm. That does not mean th time is really 2pm

The thing is that Daylight Savings Time was set up for the Farmers of the Land. But that is a tall Habitual Lie. The Farmers Never Ever used it. The Farmers get up on their own Because they know that their COWS
are lined up at 5:30 a.m. Every single Morning to be Milked. Then they line up again at 5:30 p.m. to Milked again. This been done for1100 of Years and will not change for them Someone is Congress back
in the EARLY 60’S thought it would be good for Everyone in the United States to have vet up when the Roster Crowd at Daybreak.
But after a Few Years people started to HATE. there a Couple of States in the Union
that Never did go on Daylight Savings Time.
One that I know is Arizona and only One half of that State stays on it Year Around
a d Never changes their Clocks. So Beijing Joey needs to Sign this Bill so Everyone is the same in ALL 50 STATES. Beijing Joey doesn’t need his Beauty Sleep because he’s now a grown BOY not a Child in School. Beijing Joey is a grown man and he needs get off his LAZY A $ S and think of Others.
    But We The People.

I don’t want Daylight Savings Time permanent. I don’t like the idea of losing even 1 or 2 hours of sleep.

PLEASE, let the time change back in November and never ever change it again when it’s time for Spring. Changing the time gets peoples health all messed up. There are people with heart conditions, that can get messed up real bad.

When time is suppose to change back in the Fall, leave it that way for NOW ON! Quit changing the time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Shouldn’t we be using Standard Time? This was the original time and Daylight Savings time the one that was added. Put us backj in line with the rest of the world.

  17. Sheila March 18, 2022 at 2:17 am Reply

Just leave it regular Mother Nature time, it’s worked for eons. So, we don’t have an extra hour to PLAY! In this era of technology and 24hour society we aren’t saving any resources with daylight saving time.

  18. Trish March 18, 2022 at 7:13 pm Reply

Who cares? Our once great country is falling down the socialist rabbit hole, and the senate cares about the time change? Time to get rid of these people.

  19. JP G March 19, 2022 at 6:15 pm Reply

Keep it standard time, based on when the sun is at its zenith for the area. Human beings follow circadian rhythm, so the change twice a year is not normal and studies show it causes more accidents and possible health problems until our bodies try to adjust. If people want to have more daylight in the summer afternoons and evenings, start your workday earlier. or move to Alaska during the summer months!

Congress in the late 50’s and EARLY 60’s they input a Bil! In to Establish DLS Time for the FARMERS. So Congress past and Approving it. So Every6 Months it would change. But I’m glad to see Congress Members get off their Lazy *urge and Do something for a Change.

In October go back to CST and stay on standard time. It’s in syncs with nature. I like the extra daylight. DST at 1point used to start last Sun in April and last Sun in Oct. Then it got moved to the 1st Sunday in April. Then the start date got moved to the 2nd Subay on March. Finally, the DST ended with the 1st Sunday in November.
    Go back to CST.

It’s just a matter of getting used to it, so I’m i favor of the Sunshine Protection Act.
