Illegal? Oakland Mayor Takes Sanctuary City Policy to Shocking New Level

Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf earned her stripes in the Trump Resistance Army this weekend when she did something that not even her Democrat colleagues in Chicago, San Francisco, and New York have had the temerity to do: She sent out a city-wide alert warning illegal immigrants that federal deportation agents were getting ready to do a sweep of the area.

Thanks to Schaaf’s (potentially illegal) actions, Oakland is not just a sanctuary city but an actual safe harbor for illegal immigrants to be free from federal enforcement authorities.

It remains to be seen if the Trump administration will charge Schaaf with obstruction of justice; she apparently believes that she’s in the clear since she did not share information that she got through official channels. She was merely passing on credible secondhand reports, which could put her beyond DOJ prosecution. Either way, though, the fact that a city official was willing to go this far to protect illegal immigrants should send a chill down the spine of anyone who believes in the rule of law.

“I know that Oakland is a city of law-abiding immigrants and families who deserve to live free from the constant threat of arrest and deportation,” Schaaf said. “I believe it is my duty and moral obligation as Mayor to give those families fair warning when that threat appears imminent.”

Sorry, but no. It isn’t. You have the wrong beliefs. Also, there is no such thing as a “law-abiding” illegal immigrant. Yes, we can make the distinction between people who come here and play by the rules and those that come here and join MS-13, but at the end of the day, you broke U.S. law when you crossed the border. We don’t necessarily mean you any harm, but if it’s your time to go back, it’s your time to go back.

We just don’t have the resources and economic foundation to care for anyone and everyone who wants to leave their country and soak up our public funds. Get in line, apply for a visa, and come here legally if you can. Otherwise, you will NEVER be able to “live free from the threat of deportation,” because guess what? That’s what we do with people who came here illegally! It’s nothing personal. That’s the choice YOU made when you came here.

But it’s fine. If Schaaf wants an escalation, we’re certain that the Trump administration will be only too happy to play hardball. Trump is going to show each and every one of these local Democrats that no policy, no obstructionist mayor, and no phony referendum is going to keep him from enforcing federal immigration law. ICE will just have to do things the hard way, with or without local help. And yeah, unfortunately, that increases the chances that someone’s going to get hurt and it increases the chances that some borderline individuals will get deported. But if that’s the price we have to pay for a country where the laws mean something, well, you can damn well bet it’s one we’re willing to fork over.
