Minority Activists to White Allies: Remember, You’re Still Racist

According to Marchaé Grair, social media associate for the United Church of Christ, white allies are welcome to join the fight against societal racism…as long as they remember that they are still racists.
You might think it counterproductive to start making demands of whites who generously dedicate their time and passion to helping people of color, but liberals have always had an appetite for eating their own.
In her blog post, Grair helpfully lists 10 ways that white anti-racism allies can “actively reject” their privilege. For instance:
“Take up minimal space during anti-racism dialogues and protests. Protests and anti-racism discussions should always center on the oppression experienced by people of color. If you are an ally who always has the microphone or the bullhorn, you’re taking up too much space.”
Hey, so, we know that we’re not going to get anywhere without you. And yeah, we know that you could just as easily stay home. But listen, we only want your help if you’re willing to do exactly what we say. Deal?
Of course, when you have Black Lives Matter protesters out there shouting down liberal Democrats – their only hope of turning their idiotic demands into legislation – it’s pretty much par for the course. These racial activists would rather bathe in their own self-righteousness than actually get anything done.
White liberals should also know when to shut up, says Grair. “Realize that all discussions about race aren’t for you,” she advises. “And be okay with that. Some conversations aren’t for white folks. An anti-racist ally is like a guest at a family dinner. You’re invited to the table, but you should know what conversations require your abstention.”
Again, she seems to miss a fairly obvious point: That these “anti-racist allies” don’t have to accept the dinner invitation at all. She seems to believe that marching and protesting and spewing nonsense online is so intrinsically rewarding that white activists will go to any lengths necessary to stay in the club. And yeah, that’s probably true of the college kids with multi-colored hair who are using these issues to get back and Mom and Dad, but that’s a pretty narrow field of support.
“Recognize that you’re still racist,” she concludes. “White people always benefit from institutionalized racism, no matter how anti-racist your ideologies may be.”
What a peculiar strategy. Who knows, maybe she’s on to something. Maybe we’ll start seeing charities like UNICEF slap donors across the face instead of thanking them for their contributions. Politicians can start criticizing their supporters for not supporting them “in the right way.” Retailers like Walmart could begin refusing service to customers who dare to shop anywhere else.
But probably not, huh?

Only you know whether you fall into either category. Your comment about “the racist” led me to think that perhaps you do. Please note that I did not suggest you are racist; I merely asked if the race of the person making such an accusation makes a difference.

The first definition is way off…only those who commit violence against you are racists. You know better than that. By the way, Liz, I have no idea what you mean about “Wisconsin language” or my inability to understand it but I understand Wisconsin better than the vast majority of New Yorkers (state). Madison is as liberal as any northeastern city. Of course, most people are state workers or U. of Wis. professors (maybe some of yours?). I know Wisconsin is a solid red state. Problem is (for the state and the whole country), nearly 53 percent of the voting age population live in heavily-liberal Madison or Milwaukee.

OK. Here we go. Webster’s definitions are not wrong, but probably do not go far enough. There is definitely an element of bigotry and prejudice based on the idea that Jews, Blacks, Native Americans, Latinos or whoever are not quite on the same level as the racist, frequently a Caucasian. It doesn’t matter if you call it bigotry instead of racism, the opinion of the racist is defined by his or her preconceived ideas about the race as a whole and does not allow for individual situations: Blacks are poorly educated, X is a black man, so X is poorly educated.
The other definition regarding violence is also accurate because violence takes many forms. Referring to a dark-skinned American as a nigger is as violent as hitting that person with a baseball bat. Both actions are motivated by hate. Both are racist because the hate is directed against a group rather than an individual.
And then there is the question of what determines a race. Is it place of origin, ethnicity, religion? To me that does not matter. Any violence, verbal or physical, towards a group of people, based solely on their belonging to that group, is racist.

Blacks are poorly educated because they drop out of school. They go to the same schools as whites, listen to the same teachers. What they get out of it and want they do with it is their fault not that of the white people, the red people or the orange people. It has nothing to do with being racist, it is their culture
Blacks are not the only ones who drop out of school. And the reasons are the same across the board: lack of early childhood education, the level of education of the parents, the number of books in the house, parent involvement with the kid’s education, no role models for success in school.

You have no way of knowing this (and that is an important point) but I grew up in apartheid South Africa where I was carefully trained to be a racist. And that is something I have to fight against every day of my life. I find it very hard to warm to Africans as a group, African Americans as well, but I do everything in my power to make sure that no black person I meet has any idea that I was indoctrinated to think they were evil, and inferior.
I’m sure you will find this very hard to understand, or accept. But I ask you to please try.

Ferguson, Detroit and Baltimore were hardly random sprees; they were the reaction of an angry, frustrated young people to police brutality aimed at their ethnic group. With very few alternatives to make their grievances heard, I cannot blame them for reacting as they did.

I have lived in the United States for 32 years, and I have some wonderful friends. Recently, I even became a citizen. And before you ask what took me so long, I’ll tell you.

Look at him he cannot even talk right.” I was lucky the judge stopped her. I guess her father was Repub governor before. I will investigate that and report to you. And that is not fiction – it happened to me personally.

I also fell short on my tuition and a White man helped me finish my school. I ran for graduate student senate and I was elected by all White students. “Run Hillary Run!” Maybe there is more to this bumper sticker … If we want a worthy successor to Ronald Reagan, maybe we should join the parade, urge her to get in front early, help her get the Democratic nomination and set up her “sure win.” Remember Ted Kennedy and the 1980 primaries? Enthusiasm bubbled for another Kennedy, as it simmers now for a second Clinton. As the convention neared, the truth reappeared. Benghazi – I mean Chappaqua – ended him, re-nominated Jimmy Carter, who was then crushed by Reagan.
So, what does Ted Kennedy, the “inevitable president,” have to do with Hillary, the new “inevitable president?” Let’s be fair. Her husband had some troubles, but let’s evaluate her on the merits. Isn’t that what she would ask?
Whitewater. Do you recall that one? She and Bill got mired in an investigation spurred by a Resolution Trust Corporation investigator. A bank owned by two friends went under. The two friends were also Clinton real estate partners. The real estate deal, like the bank, went bad. Suddenly allegations surfaced of undue pressure by the Clintons on someone to lend several hundred thousand dollars to one of their real estate pals.
The slope got slipperier fast. Multiple criminal referrals went to the FBI, each naming both Clintons. A Senate investigation followed, and the Securities and Exchange Commission convicted their friends. Somehow, the Clintons – now in the White House – slipped away without charges. But the story is not over. One of their friends was put in prison for 18 months for not answering questions about the Clintons’ role. As Bill left office, he snatched the curtain closed with a presidential pardon. So, what is really behind Curtain Number One?
Travelgate. How ironic that young Hillary sharpened her teeth on Watergate, and then got one of her own! It was simple: One day, America woke to find longtime public servants that managed presidential travel gone. In their place, a clutch of Clinton friends. No one could imagine how this had happened, not least Hillary. No one could figure out how one set got fired and the other hired. An impartial authority summed it: “Hillary Clinton gradually came under scrutiny for allegedly having played a central role in the firings and making false statements about her role.” The independent counsel investigating said “there was insufficient evidence her statements were either knowingly false or that she understood that her statements led to the firings.” Again, Hillary slipped away. Breezes still play with that curtain.
Filegate. Here was another scandal involving Hillary. In this one, similar to Obama’s and Nixon’s misuse of the IRS, the Clinton Office of Personnel Security pressured the FBI for access to personal FBI files of several hundred individuals. Allegations swirled around Hillary. The appearance was that she was tied to hiring that Office’s head, perhaps more. Two independent prosecutors pulled back the curtain, but then let it drop. Whatever her role, she was no Bess Truman. The curtain remains to be reopened.
Vince Foster Affair. Then – long sigh –the bizarre story of Vince Foster and his sad end. The Deputy White House Counsel, former partner of Hillary’s at the Rose Law Firm, and friend of Hillary’s was found dead from a gunshot, suicide. Shocking, lots of questions, but this one lingers: Before law enforcement got to Foster’s office, Hillary’s senior staff removed several boxes of documents and two addressed envelopes. After everyone disclaimed knowledge of everything, a few documents turned up on a table in the residence, just the way Hillary’s Travel Office friends popped in from nowhere. Hillary’s fingerprints were on them. She could never explain where the documents came from. The FBI was still conducting follow-up on Whitewater and Travelgate. That curtain shivers.
Then, Hillary’s role in Benghazi. Her failure to provide security to an Ambassador begging help a month prior to dying in a terrorist attack is negligent at best. Her flat-out misjudgment on related issues during the event is equally shocking. Dissembling to sweep that terrorist attack under the rug prior to the 2012 election was shameless. Her indifference toward both affected families and Congress is inexcusable. Trying to close that curtain herself, with an emotional plea before Congress to cease-and-desist constitutional oversight – “what does it matter?” – is not only arresting, but transparently self-serving, unconscionable.
For encore? Former Obama Secretary of Defense Robert Gates attests to Hillary’s political cravenness: “Hillary told the president that her opposition to the [2007] surge in Iraq had been political because she was facing him in the Iowa primary. . . .” In short, while she knew what was right, she did the opposite – for political gain. Does that not say it all?
Hillary’s reflexive predisposition is this: To put her political career above all else. Missing are traits every American seeks in their president, trust and good judgment. What anchored the Articles of Impeachment against Republican and Democrat presidents (one, Hillary’s husband)? Breach of trust and bad judgment. That is what lies behind the curtains, abuse of power.
So, if leadership in the Democratic Party has drifted so far “out of phase” with America that they chant “Run Hillary Run!” – let them. Do not mention Ted Kennedy, criminal referrals, independent counsel reports, unanswered questions, flapping curtains, her murky past – not yet. From Kennedy’s hubris came Carter’s re-nomination. From Carter’s record, America got Reagan.

My career for over 36 years was working with children who were abandoned, abused or neglected, from birth to age 18.

I read the note. Thought about it for a few minutes. I called Mrs. White, the dorm mother for the girls and asked her to make sure they were decent, I was coming up.
I banged on the door and walked in.
I asked all the girls to come into the lounge area, where I sat on the floor, with the note in my hand and asked the obvious question.
