President Obama allowed a situation at the border to grow into a full-fledged crisis in the final years of his tenure. Thanks to policies that allowed undocumented children to stay in the country if they made it across the border, hundreds of thousands of these minors began swarming into the United States in 2014 and 2015.
So enormous was the problem that an overwhelmed Border Patrol could do little more than (vaguely) process the new arrivals before sending them to live with relatives – wherever that might be. They were given court dates…but few bothered to show up. They immediately fled into the so-called “shadows” and disappeared off the government’s radar.
All along, we were assured that this was nothing to be alarmed about. In fact, Obama often mocked Republicans who made this out to be a major problem, especially in conjunction with the Syrian refugee crisis. He laughed about how they were afraid of “women and children,” even after a woman orchestrated a sickening terrorist attack in San Bernardino, California.
Making it worse, of course, was the fact that many of these arrivals were not “minors” in the sense of the word that Obama meant it. Some were older teenage men who were every bit as dangerous as they would have been if they were 18 when they crossed the border. Others were not minors by ANY definition of the word, but since the Border Patrol was not compelled to get evidence of the immigrants’ ages, the so-called “refugees” simply said they were underage so they could go live with family.
Unfortunately, “family” meant, in many cases, gangs like MS-13, who were using the administration’s inability to enforce the law to build up their ranks with new El Salvadorian arrivals. The gang flourished under Obama’s non-leadership, growing to become a serious threat to the U.S. East Coast with their murdering, raping, drug-dealing ways. The Obama Justice Department looked the other way and the problem grew worse.
And then Donald Trump came along.
On Friday, while calling for new immigration laws that would close dangerous loopholes that have allowed terrorists to take up residence in the United States, President Trump highlighted one of his most remarkable achievements: The complete and utter devastation of the MS-13 gang. In a speech, Trump said that federal officials had worked with local law enforcement to decimate the group, leading to an 83% increase in arrests, prosecutions, and deportations.
“To any member of MS-13 listening, I have a message for you: We will find you. We will arrest you. We will jail you. We will throw you the hell out of the country,” Trump said at an FBI graduation event in Quantico, Virginia.
Trump said it was better to send them out than to jail them. “Jail,” he said, “we have to take care of them. Who the hell wants to take care of them. But these are killers – these are people that are sadists in many cases. We don’t want them.”
And thanks to the tough policies of President Trump – so different from the weak, liberal policies of his predecessor – we don’t have to invite these dangerous criminals into our country anymore.
