Obama Official: Not Defending China is Like Ignoring “Hitler in the 30s”
We’ve seen some distasteful and misguided defenses of China over the last couple of months, but this may be the first time we’ve seen a so-called foreign policy expert actually claim that criticizing China is morally wrong. Leave it to the Obama administration to cough up someone like Max Baucus, who served as the U.S. ambassador to China under the 44th president. Baucus appeared on CNN Wednesday to say that he could no longer remain silent while the Trump administration put the blame for the COVID-19 pandemic on his friends in Beijing.
“This is not rocket science. Here’s what really concerns me, the administration rhetoric is so strong against China it’s over the top,” Baucus said. “We are entering kind of an era which is similar to Joe McCarthy back when he was red-baiting the State Department in attacking communism and a little bit like Hitler in the 30s in that a lot of people knew what was going on was wrong, they knew it was wrong, but they didn’t stand up and say anything about it, they felt intimidated.”
Yeah, poor China. No one’s sticking up for them. Well, as long as you remove the Democratic Party and every single liberal news outlet from the equation, that is. Other than THAT…yeah, China doesn’t have a friend in the world.
“And now, in the United States, if anybody says anything reasonable about China, he or she feels intimidated, alright? His head’s going to be chopped off,” Baucus continued. “And back in the 30s in Germany it was very similar, people who were responsible in the U.S. and responsible in Germany couldn’t speak up, and I worry that some of that is happening now and it’s very dangerous, and I think it’s happening in part because the Republican administration and Donald Trump realizes the economy is not doing well probably because of the coronavirus and they therefore have to pivot, they have to blame somebody, and they’re blaming China.”
Well, the last bit of that argument is so familiar that we could recite it in our sleep. Which completely disproves Baucus’s theory that there’s some sort of appeasement/Hitler/McCarthy/Iraq War silent curtain in which critics of the president are terrified to speak out. It’s ridiculous. ALL WE SEE are people sticking up for China. ALL WE SEE are people accusing the president of using China as a deflector shield. ALL WE SEE are mainstream liberals parroting the CCP’s talking points. If people are “intimidated,” we’d hate to see what they would do if they felt free to speak their minds!
We certainly hope China is paying Baucus well to go out there and peddle this balderdash. It would be really embarrassing to find out that he’s doing it for free.
