Portland Mayor to Rioters: You’re Just Helping Trump Get Reelected!

Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler has said a whole lot of stupid stuff over the last couple of months, and his efforts to stop the rioting and destruction in his city have been anemic at best. The liberal mayor has made a fool of himself by blaming Trump and federal authorities for the chaotic actions of the anarchists in Portland, and his meager attempts at settling the crowd have earned him scorn from the protesters themselves. Too infected with Trump Derangement Syndrome to work with the White House and too far to the center (read: not an actual communist) to gain favor with the rioters, Wheeler is in a kind of political no man’s land.

This week, Wheeler took a different approach, trying to reason with the protesters using Democratic logic: If you keep trashing the city, it’s only going to help President Trump get reelected. At a press conference with Portland Police Chief Chuck Lovell, Wheeler admonished the protesters for their latest “peaceful” demonstration, which involved trying to burn down a police precinct.

“Last night, 200-300 people went to East Precinct intent on violence. The purpose was to attack the East Precinct facility and the people therein,” Wheeler said. “Exits were blocked; they were barricaded shut with cars and with two-by-fours. Security cameras were disabled, and accelerants were used to set and grow fires. The attack was immediate, it was intentional, and it was planned. It was intended to cause serious injury or death, and it very well could have.

“When you commit arson with an accelerant in an attempt to burn down a building that is occupied by people that you have intentionally trapped inside, you are not demonstrating; you are attempting to commit murder,” Wheeler continued, stating facts that used to be considered too obvious to bear reciting. “This is not peaceful protest. This is not advocacy to advance reforms or transform any system.”

Wheeler then made his last-ditch effort to persuade the rioters.

“Don’t think for a moment that if you are participating in this activity, that you are not being a prop for the reelection campaign of Donald Trump — because you absolutely are,” he said. “You are creating the B-roll film that will be used in ads nationally to help Donald Trump during his campaign. You don’t want to be part of that? Then don’t show up.”

To the reasonable, this sounds like a pretty persuasive argument, right? You’re a leftist – why would you do things that will help Mr. Fascist win in November?

But Wheeler is still treating these lunatics as if they give a crap who wins the presidential election. These aren’t “Democrats.” These aren’t “liberals.” These are thugs who want to literally destroy this country, burn it down, and replace it with some vague communist utopia they have lingering in their diseased heads. Actually, you can pretty much scrap the replacement part – they’re really only interested in the first two steps. It’s well past time to stop treating this as if it were a legitimate political protest. This is terrorism, and it needs to be stomped out.
