Republicans Finally Pull Off Major Win
(RestoreAmericanGlory.com) – Kevin McCarthy has officially been voted as the next Speaker of the House following the 15th ballot. After four days of chaos and GOP infighting, the Speaker has officially been elected allowing the chamber to return to being a functioning legislative branch.
The vote ended early on Saturday morning, and it marked the comeback of McCarthy who had been in the GOP leadership for over a decade. His victory though also showed how tentative support for leadership members can be, as he had to go through four days of voting rounds during which he had to agree to a number of concessions in order to win the necessary votes.
Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.) said during his speech nominating McCarthy to the House floor that while the President called the situation embarrassing, and many have been talking about it being chaos in the House, the reality is that this is democracy. He added that they knew it was messy, but that being able to have these debates was a key part of the country not being under an authoritarian regime.
McCarthy ultimately managed to win the Speakership with 216 votes after six ultraconservative GOP members switched their votes to present. While this did not show outright support for McCarthy it was a step forward considering the opposition that he had previously faced from these members. Fourteen other holdouts had already switched their vote during the 12th ballot and Rep. Andy Harris (R-Md.), changed his vote on the 13th ballot.
