Sanctuary Insanity: Cop Suspended for Turning Illegal Alien Over to ICE
The Fairfax County Police Department in Virginia decided to make a sanctuary example out of a police officer this week when they suspended one of their cops for turning an illegal immigrant over to federal authorities after a traffic accident. The agency released a statement on Tuesday announcing the suspension, but they withheld the officer’s name from the public. The chief of police told the Washington Post that the officer would have to undergo “remedial training” so as to avoid such a tragic mistake in the future.
“This is an unfortunate issue where the officer was confused,” Chief Edwin Roessler Jr. said. “We have trained on this issue a lot. This is the first time we’ve had a lapse in judgment, and the officer is being punished. Our county is one of the most diverse counties in the nation and no one should have the perception that FCPD is acting as a civil immigration agent for ICE.”
We’re sure that “diversity” includes white-collar criminals, drug dealers, and rapists as well. Why don’t you stop arresting those folks if being a criminal is just a matter of, you know, an alternative way of life? Newsflash, Chief Roessler, it is not LEGAL to be in this country without papers. So why are you commenting on the diversity of your county and not the inherent crime that this person committed by skipping his deportation hearing, eh? As far as we know, there is nothing people from diverse ethnic background have to fear from ICE. Only those who are in this nation illegally should be worried, and why it would be your job to protect those people is beyond us.
Sounds to us like it wasn’t your officer who had a “lapse in judgement.”
But this is the insanity that sanctuary laws have brought to our country. No one is suggesting that police officers need to become de facto immigration agents. Far from it. But if you detain someone and see that they’re wanted by federal authorities, why WOULDN’T you contact the feds? Would you have let this guy go if he had a federal warrant out for a charge of interstate kidnapping? “Oh, that’s the federal government’s business, we don’t want to get involved with that, lawd no.” Come on.
In a just world, this officer would be immediately reinstated, and, furthermore, put in charge of developing a new department policy on how to handle illegal immigrants with outstanding warrants. But we’re sure the bleeding heart liberals of Virginia would have a fit, terrified that they might lose some valuable notion of “diversity” if they actually started enforcing the law. Can’t have that.
