The headline reads: San Francisco voters recall three school board members – including the chairman. But this was no small local issue. It was a political and educational Mother of All Bombs (MOAB) hitting the foundation of the American public school system.
First, we are talking about San Francisco – one of the most progressive Democrat cities in America. President Biden carried the city with 80 percent of the vote. It is the political base of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. This is a community in which the elected radical left members of the school board felt comfortable enough to rename several dozen schools according to their extreme woke-ism.
Among the historic figures that the board deemed offensive were George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt – all of whom appear on Mount Rushmore as among America’s most respected heroes.
The board also imposed divisive race education policies and harsh mask and vaccine mandates. They are pushing a woke revisionist history of the black experience – and bringing into the modern era with white-shaming of children.
These are the kinds of things that the nutty – and dangerous – leftwing authoritarians are doing across the nation. But the pushback has been growing. The victory of Glenn Youngkin in the Virginia gubernatorial race was partially credited to his promise to stand up to the woke policies of the state’s educators – and to bring public school education back in line with the demands of parents. There is no objection to teaching the facts of slavery, segregation and institutional racism – just not the assumption that all non-blacks are inherently racists.
To the dismay of those on the left, there has arisen a wave of school board candidates who are pushing back against both the ridiculous pandemic policies and the indoctrination of school children along philosophic and political lines. The leftwing media outlets are already sounding the alarm about “right-wingers running for office” – which is nothing less than the left’s usual belief that only they are suitable to govern.
While the general trend seems to be running in favor of the challengers to leftwing school policies, San Francisco is a stunner. It is not only that the recall of the most radical members of the school board was successful in a leftwing city, but also the margin of victory that was shocking – totally unpredicted. More than 70 percent of the voters cast their ballots in favor of the recall.
This leaves San Francisco Mayor London Breed with the responsibility of appointing new members of the Board – and for the Board to elect a new chairperson. Since she looked upon the old school board with favor, it will not be easy for her to fill the now-vacant positions with people the parents are going to like. On the other hand, replacing the old members with political clones will shift the parents’ political wrath onto her – and it may be seen in the next election.
This is not one of those shocking news stories that will ebb quickly. This has emboldened the parents across the nation to take up the cause of restoring non-political education in America’s public schools. In the short run, it will pressure more governors, mayors, and school boards to end the politically driven mask and vaccine mandates. – and the woke spin on education.
In the final analysis, this may also be a ground-shaking event that is the precursor of a political earthquake coming in November.
So. There ‘tis.
