According to most national polls, Democrats were on their way to having an extremely good November. Thanks to an inordinate (putting it mildly) amount of negative press aimed at the president, the minority party had a solid chance of taking back the Senate and even an outside shot at reclaiming the House of Representatives in the midterm elections. While we will never again put a great deal of stock into what the polls say about an upcoming election, there could be no doubt that Republicans were getting nervous about what could have potentially been a blowout year at the voting booth.
Now, after a disastrous shutdown blunder that lasted three days before Democrats surrendered, that calculus could be changing. The party of illegal immigration is beginning to finally realize that they are on the wrong side of this issue. Yes, their liberal base is gung-ho for amnesty, and yes, the majority of Americans would like to see the so-called Dreamers protected from deportation. But when forced to choose between illegal immigrants and the continued functioning of the federal government? Americans made it clear that they are not THAT concerned about amnesty.
Democrats in conservative/battleground states reportedly came begging Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to cave on DACA this weekend, telling him their phones were ringing off the hook with constituents angered by the party’s willingness to choose illegal immigrants over American citizens. He came around to their way of thinking, extracted a thin promise from Mitch McConnell about an upcoming DACA vote, agreed to end the shutdown, and threw his party into disarray. Progressives from Luis Gutierrez to Nancy Pelosi to Kamala Harris blasted Schumer for giving a huge victory to the Republicans, none of them apparently wise to the fact that not all Democrats live in Berkeley, California.
As far as we’re concerned, we’d love to see the Democrats lose all political calculation and just go headlong into an all-out attempt to please their most extreme left fringe, because it would bring about their demise as a viable national party. They came pretty damn close to going in that direction in the primaries, when the best defense they could mount against Crazy Bernie was Crooked Hillary. Next time, the self-styled socialist (or one of his minions) could easily nab the nomination and destroy the Democratic Party from the inside out. But then, we’re just daydreaming.
“Big win for Republicans as Democrats cave on Shutdown,” President Trump, doing a victory lap on Twitter. “Now I want a big win for everyone, including Republicans, Democrats and DACA, but especially for our Great Military and Border Security. Should be able to get there. See you at the negotiating table!”
The GOP holds the cards now, and the Democrats have had their bluff called. We DARE them to try this stunt again in three weeks. Republicans need to take advantage of this unique opportunity to extract a good immigration deal and move forward on the agenda that put Trump into the White House. There’s never been a better time.
