Ted Cruz Condemns Leftist Riots: “We’re Seeing Our Country Torn Apart.”
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) has been heartbroken watching major American cities – Minneapolis, Seattle, and Portland, just to name a few – fall to violence and left-wing, thuggish tactics. On Tuesday, he brought his anger to the Senate floor, convening a special hearing of the Judiciary Committee to investigate Antifa and other radical groups that are spreading violence in the wake of George Floyd’s death in May.
In an interview with Fox News about the hearings, Cruz said it was time for Americans to face the truth about these groups.
“Across the country, we’re seeing horrific violence, we’re seeing our country torn apart. Violent anarchists and Marxists are exploiting protests to transform them into riots and direct assaults on the lives and safety of their fellow Americans,” Cruz said.
In his opening statement at the hearing, Cruz said there is a world of difference between the peaceful protests led by Martin Luther King Jr. in the 1960s and the burnings and lootings that have characterized the current round of protests.
“These violent riots are not spontaneous, nor are they mere coincidences. Instead, the evidence suggests they are organized terror attacks designed to instill fear and tear down the fundamental institutions of government. This hearing is designed to understand who is driving the violence, who is driving the assaults, who is driving the murders, and what their objective is,” Cruz said.
Cruz isn’t limiting his inquiry into Antifa and the smaller organizations that organize under that banner. He’s also authorizing an investigation into Black Lives Matter, which he insists has little or nothing to do with the motto that it has taken as its name. Much like Antifa has nothing to do with actually combating fascism, Black Lives Matter is more concerned about pushing a socialist agenda than it is about preserving black lives.
“The actual organization denominated Black Lives Matter was created by avowed Marxists pursuing a radical agenda including defunding police departments across the country and that agenda, if implemented, would have the consequence of a great many more Black lives being lost,” Cruz said.
In his remarks to Fox News, Cruz said that he was hopeful that Democrats would join him in condemning the destruction of the country. However, he noted, that hope was dwindling by the day.
“When Nancy Pelosi calls federal law enforcement officers stormtroopers and that is a term that hearkens back to Nazi Germany, when she wrongfully alleges that they are kidnapping Americans, that is a grotesque lie, and a slander and it endangers the lives of law enforcement,” he said. “It reflects the very unfortunate political determination that a lot of Democrats have made — that given the choice between standing with innocent Americans or violent terrorists seeking to hurt their fellow citizens, to date too many of them have stood with terrorists.”
