Trump Believes Last Week Was a Win. He’s Absolutely Right.
Not for the first time, the media is saying that Trump’s presidency is in chaos, that he’s just finished the worst week of his tenure in office, and that it’s only a matter of time before the wheels come completely off the bus and Republicans begin abandoning him in droves. The withdrawal from Syria was a mistake of historic proportions that led to Defense Secretary James Mattis’ resignation, a crushing blow for the “adultness” of the Executive Branch. The shutdown is a political disaster. The Mueller investigation is closing in. Trump is lying in bed, raging at the television, completely out of commission.
All this and more.
But according to a new story in Bloomberg, President Trump “thinks all that upheaval adds up to a winning hand.”
He’s absolutely right.
Go back and look at those moments in Trump’s presidency where the media has gone into full-on freakout mode. They are, perhaps without exception, the times where Trump has done the courageous thing. The right thing. The things he promised the American people when he was on the campaign trail. Pulling out of the Iran deal. Yanking the U.S. out of the Paris Climate Agreement. Implementing the travel ban. Firing James Comey. The list goes on. On all of these occasions, the media has assured us that advisers and other top officials were getting ready to leave en masse, that Republicans were getting nervous, and that Trump would soon resign in disgrace. Instead, his popularity has only swollen. That’s because he – unlike his many predecessors – actually is doing what he promised.
This week is no exception. President Trump did not campaign on a typical Republican platform, particularly as it pertains to foreign policy. He did not hide his disdain for our Middle Eastern excursions. In point of fact, we cannot recall a time when his populist base came closer to turning on him than when he launched that limited missile strike in Syria last year. The country is in no mood for another Iraq. The country is in no mood to invade a nation, depose its leader, and set the stage for another 20 years of occupation and war. We’re done with that. And Trump is, too. That’s why he took us out of Syria, and that’s why he’s looking to take us out of Afghanistan. The foreign policy “establishment” would have us in these deserts until the end of time.
“President Trump believes one of his strengths is he is actually doing the things he told people he would do,” said Marc Lotter of Trump’s 2020 advisory committee in an interview with Bloomberg. “One of the reasons why the president was elected was because we have had politicians of both parties for many, many years saying one thing on the trail, in the commercials and from the podium, and doing another.”
Exactly. Trump was elected to shake things up. He was elected as a REBUKE of the establishment. The White House isn’t in chaos – Washington is in chaos. They’re still learning, slowly but surely, that they are not going to tame this man. They’re still learning, slowly but surely, that they are not in control of this ship any longer.
Of COURSE they’re going to squawk and scream whenever they get another lesson in MAGA. That’s how you know it’s working.
