Trump Fires Shot at Mueller: “Gone Absolutely Nuts!”

A week after President Trump relieved Attorney General Jeff Sessions of his duties, he had the Mueller investigation in his sights on social media, blasting the inquiry as having “gone absolutely nuts” in the year and a half since its creation.

“The inner workings of the Mueller investigation are a total mess,” the president wrote on Thursday. “They have found no collusion and have gone absolutely nuts. They are screaming and shouting at people, horribly threatening them to come up with the answers they want. They are a disgrace to our Nation and don’t care how many lives they ruin.”

Trump followed that up with a second tweet focusing specifically on the special counsel himself.

“These are Angry People, including the highly conflicted Bob Mueller, who worked for Obama for 8 years. They won’t even look at all of the bad acts and crimes on the other side,” he said. “A TOTAL WITCH HUNT LIKE NO OTHER IN AMERICAN HISTORY!”

It’s not clear what inspired Trump’s latest broadside attack on the special counsel; it has been several weeks since the president last mentioned the witch hunt on social media.

One possible culprit: Trump has reportedly been working with his lawyers on completing a list of written questions from Mueller. It’s possible that simply going over the questions riled his anger over what seems to be an unending investigation into his 2016 campaign.

Trump may also be irritated at the press coverage of his appointment of Matthew Whitaker as Acting Attorney General. Several Democrats have decried the appointment as unconstitutional and many are demanding that Whitaker recuse himself from the investigation. Similarly, there is talk of a bill on Capitol Hill that would grant specific legislative protection to Mueller, prohibiting Trump or any of his political appointees from interfering with the investigation. So far, Mitch McConnell has put the kibosh on the legislation, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t coming.

“Universities will someday study what highly conflicted (and NOT Senate approved) Bob Mueller and his gang of Democrat thugs have done to destroy people,” Trump wrote, concluding his rant. “Why is he protecting Crooked Hillary, Comey, McCabe, Lisa Page & her lover, Peter S, and all of his friends on the other side?”

It’s the question that answers itself, of course. Mueller’s investigation has been one-sided and illegitimate from the very beginning, but it seems that even Republicans are determined to make sure he sees it through to the end. We can only hope that when the final report is written and Mueller finally wraps this thing up, the damage to our constitutional republic will not be irreparable.
