Trump: We Have to Get “TOUGHER and SMARTER” After Egyptian Attack
Friday brought hell to Cairo as Islamic terrorists once against killed slews of their fellow Muslims…who just aren’t the right kind of Muslims for their sick ideology. The target in this case was the Sufi branch of the faith, one of the only sects of Islam that can actually lay claim to a peaceful history of worship. This, of course, makes them dangerous to the fundamentalist psychos of the Islamic State, whose Sinai affiliate has been deemed responsible for the mosque attack. 305 people were killed in the slaughter, one of the worst such attacks in modern Egyptian history.
Using guns and explosives, the militants charged into the Al-Rawdah mosque on Friday morning, rolling up to the carnage in five separate SUVs and flying the black Islamic State flag. Just as the sermon was set to begin, the militants took up positions across from the mosque and opened fire with their machine guns and hurled grenades through the windows. Egypt’s top prosecutor told the press that the attack was carried out by approximately 30 masked assailants, none of whom had been apprehended or killed by Sunday morning.
Critics are calling on the Egyptian government to do more in the fight against radical extremism, but that criticism overlooks the fact that there is not much else they CAN do. Over the last several years, the Egyptian military has thrown everything but the kitchen sink at the extremists, using tanks, warships, and tens of thousands of troops in the battle against terrorism. The entire country has been in emergency lockdown mode since April, raids have been regularly conducted in the Sinai region, and the authorities have destroyed dozens of underground tunnels that Islamists use to smuggle weapons and fighters in from the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip. And yet, the terror remains.
In several comments on Friday, President Trump condemned the attack.
“The world cannot tolerate terrorism,” he tweeted. “We must defeat them militarily and discredit the extremist ideology that forms the basis of their existence!”
In a second tweet, he said the attack was proof that the United States had no choice but to toughen up security measures meant to keep the population safe from terrorism.
“We have to get TOUGHER AND SMARTER than ever before, and we will,” he wrote. “Need the WALL, need the BAN! God bless the people of Egypt.”
It is unlikely that the U.S. will ever be forced to confront the kind of ongoing, homefront war against terrorists that is consuming Egypt right now, but Trump is right nonetheless. We must do everything in our (considerable) power to make sure that we do not invite doom to our shores. As much as these Islamist bastards love killing other Muslims, they truly cherish killing Westerners and Americans. We must never let our guard down. We must never forget what these barbarians are capable of.
