GOP Lawmaker Calls for Collab On Classified Information
(RestoreAmericanGlory.com) – In an effort to improve the handling of classified material by lawmakers in the future, Rep. James Comer, R-Ky, chair of the House Oversight Committee, plans to collaborate with House Democrats. This collaboration would particularly focus on how presidents and vice presidents handle classified material.
The Oversight Committee does hold authority over the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), which controls all documents from exiting presidents and their offices.
In a speech at the National Press Club, Comer said it was important to reform the way documents were packed up after the president and vice president left office. According to Comer, it is clearly important to have someone oversee the case and ensure that classified documents are not being boxed up. The remarks come after it was revealed that former President Donald Trump, current President Joe Biden, who was vice president during the Obama administration, as well as former Vice President Mike Pence all owned classified documents.
U.S. law states that presidents have the power to declassify material that is in their possession during their time in office. This would mean that neither Pence nor Biden would have had the power to declassify the documents that were found in their possession.
Trump, however, would have had the power to declassify the documents. The documents were found at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida in August 2022. Since then Trump has repeatedly claimed that the documents were declassified before he left office.
