PORTLAND, Ore. — A mother gave birth on a downtown Portland sidewalk Wednesday morning and walked off, leaving the newborn girl behind, police officials said.
First responders with AMR and Portland Fire were called out at about 10:45 a.m. on reports of a baby being born near Southwest 13th Avenue and Market Street.
Police officers were also dispatched after they learned the mother left the newborn on the sidewalk and walked away.
The baby girl was also taken to a local children’s hospital where she appears to be in good condition.
The mother was not cooperating with officers or medical personnel and was taken to the hospital for a mental health evaluation.
“Unfortunately, we encountered somebody that was experiencing some pretty serious mental health crisis. Both my partner and I are CIT [Crisis Intervention Team] officers and we work pretty closely with folks in crisis at times. We were able to get her stopped and get her into an ambulance and onto a hospital for a physical and also address other issues,” said Nathan Kirby-Glatkowski, who works with the PPB Neighborhood Response Team.
Portland police said they would like to thank the community members who saw what was happening and rushed to immediately cover up the baby and call 911.
“There are some really good people here,” said a woman, who lives in the neighborhood.
She said she was glad to hear the mother got the care she needed.
“That’s good to know. I’m glad to hear it, and I’m glad to hear she wasn’t alone, and she got some help,” said the woman.
