Americans Agree: Trump is Doing What He Said He Would Do
A new poll from Politico/Morning Consult shows that the majority of Americans, whether they agree with Donald Trump’s agenda or not, believe that the new president is making good on his promises. 56% of registered voters say that President Trump is taking action on his campaign message and 66% believe he has met or exceeded expectations. In the poll, Trump is even above water when it comes to job approval – 50% say he’s doing a good job, while 45% disapprove of his performance.
“While Americans are divided on President Trump’s policy agenda, most say he is making headway on it,” said pollster Kyle Dropp. “An overwhelming majority of Trump’s supporters, and even many of his critics, see a president who is delivering on his promises.”
On the issues themselves, of course, there is still a deep divide. On immigration, especially, the Politico poll showed that Americans are split over the right way forward. 43% say immigrants are a boon to the U.S. economy while 43% believe they are a burden. On illegal immigrants specifically, 46% think they should be allowed to stay in the country and be offered a path to citizenship; 38% believe they should be deported.
But hey, that’s why we had an election.
In any event, this should demonstrate to Democrats that their new argument – that Trump hasn’t actually done anything since taking office – is a non-starter. That should have been clear from the beginning…after all, how can you run around for a month screaming that the sky is falling and then turn around and say, “Oh, he’s just a performance artists masquerading as a president. He hasn’t changed a thing”…? They can’t seem to decide if they want their voters to be outraged or amused. Is Trump a fraud or a dictator?
Well, you could drive yourself crazy trying to figure it out. We’ll save you the headache: Democrats are still walking around in a stunned stupor. They thought their iron grip on this country was unbreakable. They thought conservatism was passé and outdated, destined to burn on the trash fire of history along with all the old, white guys who built this evil empire on the backs of minorities and women. They thought the socialist utopia of their dreams was just around the corner, and they still haven’t realized that it was just an illusion in their heads. America liked the cool black dude. That’s all it was about.
Maybe they’ll wake up eventually and realize that this country was never “theirs” and that most Americans loathe the things they actually stand for. Not the things they say they stand for, but the worldview from which those things ultimately spring. This country was born in the spirit of fierce individualism – a spirit that understands that the collective good is both secondary to and dependent upon the individual good. This is the essence of freedom, the cauldron of greatness, and – paradoxically – the source of all true compassion. It is not greed. It is responsibility. It is LIFE.
When it comes down to it, what Donald Trump does or does not accomplish over the next four years is not that important. It’s “important” in a relative sense, and it’s important to Americans who have suffered directly due to Obama’s policies, but it’s not important in the grandest sense of the word. What’s more important – MUCH more important – is what Trump does for the morale of this broken nation. Oh, you mean the U.S. doesn’t HAVE TO deteriorate into a wasteland of crime, economic malaise, and amoral insanity? We have a choice? We, in fact, have the same Genius flowing through our cells as the Founding Fathers?
Once enough people realize that, we won’t have to worry about little details like Obamacare, EPA regulations, or even illegal immigration. Because to realize that is to realize Something much greater than words can express.
That Something is what made America great to begin with.
