Charlottesville Proves the Left Can Make ANYTHING About Guns
To no one’s surprise, the left is trying desperately to use the events that transpired in Charlottesville to bolster their war against free speech. Leftists (you can’t even call them “liberals” anymore, because their goals are now decidedly illiberal and totalitarian) are now making the open argument that white supremacists do not deserve protection under the First Amendment. That somehow, there is a Nazi exemption to our free speech laws. That the very nature of fascist beliefs requires that we shut down such speech before it begins, using any and all means necessary.
And so the anti-fascists BECOME the fascists.
The ACLU has not always been a darling of conservative America, but we’ve never seen it abdicate its stated mission statement the way it did under this pressure from the left. While they haven’t (yet) said they won’t defend white supremacists who find their speech curtailed by the government, they HAVE decided that they will no longer protect those who march with weaponry. Because apparently “civil rights” are no longer rights when they are exercised in tandem, i.e., the First and Second Amendments simultaneously. How interesting.
As the ACLU may or may not remember, guns were not responsible for the violence that went down in Charlottesville. So unless they are including vehicles in their list of weapons that must not be used by protesters seeking the protections of the First Amendment, they are clearly conflating the topics at hand. And we somehow doubt that this country can survive for long if the ownership of a car precludes an individual from enjoying their Constitutional freedoms.
The ACLU, though, has never been a staunch defender of the Second Amendment. Like many other liberal organizations, they seem to believe there is inherent conflict between the first and second additions to the Bill of Rights. They do not understand that, far from being in conflict, these two amendments depend on one another for their very existence. Put another way, if we don’t have the Second, we don’t have the First.
But that’s not the only confusion here. There is also specific confusion about what unfolded in Charlottesville. It was the leftists who shut down the free speech rally of the right-wingers, not the other way around. Despite coming “armed to the teeth,” as the ACLU puts it, the white supremacists rally-goers still engaged in hand-to-hand combat with the belligerent counter-protesters until the cops shut the whole thing down. One lunatic’s actions don’t erase what happened leading up to that tragic moment.
And none of this had anything to do with guns.
