Columnist Predicts Major Changes to Second Amendment
According to Francis Wilkinson of Bloomberg View, it’s only a matter of time before the United States takes drastic measures to stop the “extreme gun-rights movement, and the inertia of mass death” by severely curtailing the scope of the Second Amendment. Relating Chelsea Clinton’s opinion that the Supreme Court might soon issue a “definitive” ruling on gun control, Wilkinson said that overturning the Heller decision might only be the first step in a massive effort to cure America’s gun violence.
And what a problem it is! Wilkinson, apparently bored with the left’s usual “30,000 a year” myth, says that the epidemic of violence is even worse than we realize.
“Successful nations eventually figure out ways to stop underwriting failure,” he writes. “The U.S. may continue to allow 100,000 citizens to be killed or injured each year by guns. But not forever.”
Brilliant. Now we’re not only including suicides in our gun violence statistics, we’re throwing deaths and injuries into the same pot. If we can include people who were killed on their way to buying a gun, people who hurt themselves while reading gun magazines, and people who died choking on gum – which sounds like gun – we can push those stats even higher! What are you waiting for, progressives?
According to Wilkinson, the Heller decision isn’t even that big of a deal. Widely seen as a landmark ruling that clarified the citizenry’s right to bear arms, the decision is apparently not even on the radar of the gun-grabbing movement:
Heller simply hasn’t been a big impediment to gun regulation. A series of Supreme Court moves after Heller made it clear that Scalia’s majority found much regulation perfectly acceptable.
Despite that, Wilkinson says, it could be only a matter of time before the ruling is overturned.
“Heller could be the basis of increased gun regulation, or it could be swept aside in favor of a more restrictive ruling,” he writes. “Either is possible. And given the extravagant tragedy of the status quo, either is more likely than no change at all.”
President Obama has set the stage for Democrats to push “gun control” well beyond the boundaries of the Constitution, and this is not a fight they will be abandoning anytime soon. Their propaganda – boosted by groups like Michael Bloomberg’s Everytown for Gun Safety – is getting slicker, more expensive, and further from the facts with every passing day. Wilkinson’s column should be a wake-up call to any conservative who thinks our Second Amendment rights are unassailable.
