Culture Shift: English Schoolgirls Encouraged to “Wear a Hijab” For a Day

You know, why wouldn’t a proud Western country like England take its cues from backwater, religious dictatorships like the Islamic Republic of Iran, where women are forced under penalty of imprisonment to cover their heads and faces? Hasn’t every Westerner, at one time or another, taken a look at places like Iran and Saudi Arabia and thought: You know, we should be more like them!

Well, if that thought has never occurred randomly in the wild, Muslim activists are doing their best to implant it in the West. Activists like Ghada Mohamed of the Lincoln Muslim Sisters Forum, who is now organizing a “Wear a Hijab for a Day” event in Lincolnshire, England. Mohamed thinks it’s important for English schoolgirls to gain “knowledge” of the Islamic headwear, and that there’s no better way to do that than for them to walk a day in a Muslim girl’s shoes. Or hijab, as the case may be.

According to the BBC, one Muslim schoolgirl felt alienated from her surroundings in Lincolnshire. “The hijab,” they reported, “was part of her identity, but wearing it sometimes made her feel like she was not part of the community.”

Uh, try walking down the streets of Tehran without it, and see how it makes you feel.

Or, as radio host Julia Hartley-Brewer put it: “How about the Muslim girls try NOT wearing a hijab for a day and see how nice life is in a free society where women are equal with men and don’t need to cover themselves to get respect?”

Exactly.

Look, we’re in no way condoning or advocating for bullying in schools, and if young Muslim girls are being persecuted by their classmates for wearing religious symbolism, then that’s a shame.

On the other hand, where are the feminists when this stuff crops up? They come crawling out of the woodwork every time there’s a dinner plate lightly mocking fat people being sold at Macy’s, but they have nothing to say about young Western girls being tricked into thinking that Islamic fundamentalism is A-OK? Women are treated nowhere as badly as they are treated in the Islamic Middle East…why would we want to import that regressive insanity to our modern, progressive cultures? This seems exactly backwards to everything feminists have been saying for years.

But then, these feminists are also silent when it comes to biological men destroying female sports, so it appears they are quite comfortable when it comes to picking and choosing which battles to engage.
