Dems Leave the GOP Hanging at the Border – AGAIN
(RestoreAmericanGlory.com) – Democrats on the House Homeland Security Committee had stated that they would attend the in-person field hearing taking place on Wednesday at the southern border. They had then proceeded to book their travel and call a witness before withdrawing from the hearing according to a GOP spokesperson.
The committee is set to hold a field hearing on the ongoing crisis at the southern border in McAllen, Texas on Wednesday. The hearing will include a number of witnesses, including Border Patrol Chief Raul Ortiz.
However, Democrats announced earlier this week that they would not be attending the hearing “after careful consideration.” In their statement, they also emphasized that the Republicans were trying to “politicize this event” which would go against the tradition of bipartisanship in the committee.
Ranking Member Bennie Thompson in a statement noted that this was not going to be a “fact-finding mission” focused on creating better immigration policies and securing the border, but rather it would be an opportunity for Republicans to try and promote their “extreme rhetoric” while attacking President Trump. He added that this move was being made despite the fact that it was the Republicans who had “voted against the resources border personnel need.”
However, a spokesperson for the Republican majority had previously announced that the Democrats were planning on attending the hearing and had even called for a minority witness to testify. The witness in question would have been Steven Cagan, assistant director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).
