Goodbye, Rights: California Democrats Aim to Raise Purchasing Age for Guns
California voters will soon have an opportunity to vote on whether to break their state into three separate parts, but it seems that Democrats are determined to destroy the place long before then. If a day has gone by that Sacramento elitists aren’t ripping a hole into federal law or otherwise taking a matchbook to the Constitution, we must have missed it. This week, their focus is (again) firearms, where they are hoping to turn California into the gun-free zone that has worked to stop exactly zero mass shootings over the past twenty-five years. In a blatant infringement of the Second Amendment, they want to ban all Californians under the age of 21 from buying a gun.
The proposal comes to the legislature courtesy of Assembly Bill 3, an initiative written by Assemblyman Rob Bonta and co-signed by Sen. Anthony Portantino, both of whom are (surprise!) Democrats. If passed into law – which has a pretty good chance of happening in a state desperate to be a shining model of liberal stupidity for the rest of the country – it would leave legal adults of 18, 19, and 20 years of age unable to exercise the constitutional freedoms guaranteed them by the Founding Fathers. But then, what use does California have for such an old, racist document as the Constitution of the United States, anyway?
California already has a 21-age limit when it comes to selling handguns; if this bill is passed, it would extend that restrictions to all firearms. Portantino also included in his amendment a clause that would not allow a customer to purchase more than one gun within a single 30-day period.
“As a parent, I’ve been distressed about what’s going on in Florida and very encouraged by the activism by the students,” said Portantino in February. “Anybody who has watched the young people has to be moved and shame on folks in Washington who are not moved. If they are not going to do it, we’ll do it.”
“California already wisely mandates that someone be at least 21 years of age to purchase a handgun,” said Bonta. “It’s time to extend that common-sense law to long guns in order to enhance public safety.”
It’s pretty amazing that Democrats in California (and, to be fair, elsewhere around the country) think a kid of 18 is too irresponsible to buy a gun but PLENTY responsible enough to join the Marines and have a gun issued to them. What sense does that make? Also, aren’t these the same Democrats who occasionally propose that we lower the voting age to 16 so we can take advantage of all that timeless wisdom we see from high school shooting survivors?
This is a blatant violation of the Constitution, and we almost hope the governor signs it just so it can be shot down in court someday soon. Liberal gun-grabbers need to be reminded forcefully that their twisted version of “common sense” has no home in America.
