Lawsuit Challenges Obama’s Gun Control Orders
Not even a month after President Obama unveiled a slate of executive orders surrounding the issue of gun control, a Florida attorney has filed a lawsuit against his administration seeking to block the actions. Larry Klayman, the plaintiff, is a gun owner and the founder of Freedom Watch, a watchdog group aimed at curbing federal authority. In his complaint, Klayman says that Obama’s orders are nothing more than a political stunt.
“It is clearly arbitrary and capricious for the defendants, each and every one of them, to now suddenly adopt and implement a new and different interpretation for no other reason than the political preferences of temporary occupants of elected office,” reads the suit.
According to Klayman, Obama’s initiatives are in violation of the Second Amendment. And even if they aren’t, the suit claims that by expanding the background check process, Obama skipped the constitutional process required to make significant changes to federal law.
Of course, skipping around Congress has become this president’s favorite tactic when he wants to get something done. Obama came into the White House with a different copy of the Constitution than anyone else has, and it must say that when Congress won’t go along with the president, the president may then go forth and do whatever the hell he wants. At least, that’s the only explanation for some of the extraordinary evasive actions Obama has taken over the course of the last seven years.
“These actions are unconstitutional abuses of the president’s and executive branch’s role in our nation’s constitutional architecture and exceed the powers of the president as set forth in the U.S. Constitution,” Klayman wrote.
That sentence, unwieldy as it might be, would make a fine title for a comprehensive book written on the Obama administration. But make room on the back cover for the subtitle, which could only read: And Congress and the Courts Let Him Get Away With It.
Of course, Congress and the courts are only extensions of the American people, as hard as that is to believe sometimes. The voters may not be responsible for the corruption eating Washington inside out, but this is what happens when we let our politicians get away with murdering liberty. Obama’s Constitution-despising carcass should have been thrown out of the White House in 2012, if not before. Somehow, though, we appear to have enough Americans willing to overlook these fundamental affronts to democracy if the changes Obama makes align with their political views.
And so it is with guns. Instead of having the principle to stand up and say, “Look, Mr. President, we agree with everything you’re trying to do here, but this isn’t the way to do it,” these liberals simply defend his tyranny as though the ends justify the means. And then have the gall to look at someone like Donald Trump and call him a fascist authoritarian. Well, if you want a president who followed the law, maybe you should have kept your savior in check. Payback’s a bitch, ya know?
