Richard Dawkins may be an accomplished scientist and author, but there’s only one reason he’s famous, and that’s for being one of the world’s foremost atheist thinkers. On the back of his bestselling book, The God Delusion, he has toured the world speaking to hundreds of thousands of people who find a greater truth in his view of reality than they could find in whichever religion they had been exposed to previously. And as part of his atheist philosophy, Dawkins rarely speaks kindly of those religions. He relentlessly bashes Christianity, Judaism, and any other organized religion that teaches belief in a supernatural deity, and it has made him a darling of the left.
Or at least, it once did.
Today, however, liberals are beginning to eat their own, and they’re getting a rather aggressive appetite for anyone who dares to slander Islam. Whether it’s Bill Maher, Sam Harris, or Richard Dawkins, you can trash Christianity up one side and down the other, but if you dare to say anything about the religion of terrorism, women’s oppression, public stonings, and mass murder…well, you just can’t. You just simply can’t do it. You may as well be one of those bigoted, backwards Christians, as far as they’re concerned. Islam is peace. Islam is wonder. Islam must never, ever, EVER be criticized.
Because of this bizarre protection the supposedly-progressive left places over Islam, people like Dawkins are shunned by the community that used to embrace them. Just this week, a radio station in Berkeley, California – KPFA – canceled a scheduled event with Dawkins when their listeners complained about his sins against Islam.
“We had booked this event based entirely on his excellent new book on science, when we didn’t know he had offended and hurt—in his tweets and other comments on Islam—so many people,” KPFA said in an apologetic email to those who had purchased tickets. “KPFA does not endorse hurtful speech.
“While KPFA emphatically supports serious free speech, we do not support abusive speech,” the station continued. “We apologize for not having had broader knowledge of Dawkins’s views much earlier. We also apologize to all those inconvenienced by this cancellation.”
Dawkins defended himself on his website, but really he needed only to write the following passage because it says it all.
“I am known as a frequent critic of Christianity and have never been de-platformed for that,” he wrote. “Why do you give Islam a free pass? Why is it fine to criticise Christianity but not Islam?”
Exactly. KPFA can pretend that Dawkins was being uniquely hateful in his criticism of Islam’s lesser contributions to the world, but it doesn’t pass the smell test. You can’t be a believer in “free speech” and then do what this station just did. Liberals only believe in free speech to the extent that they agree with it, and that’s becoming increasingly clear. Bash Christianity all you want. Bash white people. Bash the South. Bash America.
But don’t you dare say a cross word about Islam.
