Northam Takes Credit for “Successfully” Ensuring Gun Rally was Peaceful
There are people with a lot of nerve, and then there is Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam. The gun-grabbing Democrat spent weeks doing everything in his power to escalate the battle between Richmond and the hundreds of counties that were declaring themselves Second Amendment sanctuaries. At not a single point did Northam concede that, perhaps, he and his new Democrat majority in the legislature were moving a bit too quickly to enact draconian, unconstitutional new gun control laws. Never!
Instead, he threatened to bring in the National Guard. He accused local officials of being in violation of the law. And then, when activists began organizing for a rally in the state capital, he went into overdrive with the rhetoric. He said he had credible threats of violence. He told the media that police and Richmond officials were ready for anything. He did anything and everything he could to scare the citizenry and paint defenders of the Second Amendment as deranged terrorists.
And then, when the rally came and went without a single incident of violence, he took to social media on Monday night to claim credit for having “successfully de-escalated” the situation.
“We are all thankful that today passed without incident. The teams successfully de-escalated what could have been a volatile situation. This resulted from weeks of planning and extensive cooperation among state, local, and federal partners in Virginia and beyond,” Northam said in a statement.
The governor immediately got pushback on social media.
“Stop fearmongering,” wrote the Washington Examiner’s Bran Polumbo. “If all anyone had done was follow liberal media reports and take cues from Democratic politicians, you would have expected this political protest, launched in response to Virginia Democrats’ anti-gun legislative agenda, to end in violence and be made up of extremists.”
But we suppose that Northam must at least be credited with understanding that the event did indeed go off without a hitch. No thanks to him, true, but at least he understood that much.
That’s more than we can say for Virginia state legislator Lee Carter (D), who took to social media with this inane rant: “The ‘pro-gun’ people that terrorized Richmond yesterday probably don’t realize that all they did was tag team with fascists, strengthen the liberals’ resolve to pass gun control bills, and force the most gun-friendly Dem (me) to not show up for a day. Idiots. Absolute idiots.”
Ah. When defenders of the Second Amendment show up to peacefully protest, they are terrorizing the city. How about that.
Well, if Carter is right – if Democrats really learned nothing from this show of political force – then we dare say that a red wave is coming to Virginia sooner than later. They won’t be able to say they weren’t warned.
