Twitter’s Laughable Defense: “We Enforce Rules Without Political Bias”
Twitter has been a source of conservative suspicion for some time, but the social media company will not soon recover from the PR disaster that was Wednesday’s #TwitterLockOut.
Supposedly in response to Robert Mueller’s indictment of 13 Russian nationals, in which the Justice Department said that Twitter was awash in fake accounts doing the bidding of Moscow, the site went on a deleting spree, wiping out hundreds of thousands of “bots,” many of which were almost certainly just people who happened to support conservatives and the president. The mass purge angered many of the top Twitter conservatives, including columnists and commentators from Fox News, Breitbart, and elsewhere around the web.
From USA Today:
The hashtag #TwitterLockOut was trending in the U.S. on Wednesday morning as thousands of accounts, including those belonging to Michael Flynn Jr., son of former national security adviser Michael Flynn, and Infowars editor Paul Joseph Watson complained that hundreds, and in some cases thousands, of their followers had been shut down.
“The twitter purge is real,” Fox News commentator Dan Bongino wrote. “I woke up and saw I lost 100 or so followers,” columnist Adriana Cohen tweeted.
Twitter would not say how many accounts it purged.
“As part of our ongoing work in safety, we identify suspicious account behaviors that indicate automated activity or violations of our policies around having multiple accounts, or abuse,” the company said in a statement.
In their statement, the company denied that the purge had anything to do with partisan ideology. “Twitter’s tools are apolitical,” they said, “and we enforce our rules without political bias.”
Oh, okay. If you say so.
That fails to explain why there was a rash of almost-exclusively conservative users who found themselves suddenly locked out of their accounts on Wednesday or forced to provide a phone number in order to get back into the site. “The twitter attack on conservative hit me too last night,” wrote Dan Borgino. “I was deemed ‘ineligible’ to use twitter ads and had followers purged. Twitter should be ashamed, we have to organize a response.”
There is a concerted effort on the left to make it seem as though every conservative social media phenomenon is driven by Russian trolls and bot networks. Thanks to biased reporting of the Mueller investigation, the media has given sites like Twitter license to simply begin waging a war of censorship against anyone who supports Donald Trump or anyone else on the right. Strangely enough, supporters of Bernie Sanders and other politicians on the far left – also named as politicians that the Russians supported – have not seen similar purges. Nor have they been the subject of this dehumanizing propaganda. How interesting.
What this really comes down to is this: Democrats still don’t want to admit that Hillary Clinton lost the 2016 election. They don’t want to admit that this country, after two Obama victories, isn’t heading toward the progressive “utopia” that they hoped was in the making. So they’re living in an alternate reality where Americans got duped into supporting Donald Trump by nefarious Russians. As soon as we get the Russians out of our hair, things can go back to normal and we can get back to electing Democrats. As such, anyone who supports Trump online is by default the product of a Russian bot farm.
Or to put it another way: Conservative thought IS Russian propaganda and vice versa.
We’ve seen a lot of attempts by the left to shut down opposing opinions over the years, but this may take the cake.
