Is it fine for people of color to “segregate” themselves away from white people? According to at least one small group of students at the University of Texas, San Antonio, the answer is, “Of course it is!” That’s why they’re launching the publication of NWA Magazine: No Whites Allowed. And they courted plenty of controversy when they began advertising the March 1 publication party on Facebook and on flyers around campus.
“Thursday at La Botanica from 8-11pm there will be the NWA Zine release party,” the Facebook event description said. “This zine specifically features and promotes black and brown lgbtqa creatives. We hope to showcase our talent and create an open space for our voices to be heard.”
Quick question, slightly off-topic: Now there’s an “a” to the LGBTQ acronym? How friggin long is this thing going to be?
Anyway, according to Campus Reform, the description went on to explain why such a magazine was necessary: “For a very long time,” it read, “black and brown people, especially those who are queer, have been told that they don’t have a space. That they don’t have a voice or a say. With this we would like to create a space.”
Literally no one involved with the publication of this magazine was alive at a time when black and brown people did not “have a space.” Just saying.
(Oh, and our curiosity got the best of us. According to Wikipedia, the “a” may stand for either “allies” or “asexual.” So there’s that.)
“It’s a zine for QPOC and by QPOC,” wrote student Kayla Ramsey in defense of the magazine’s name. “White people are welcome to come to the event, but the main goal is to celebrate and empower people that society routinely ignores and rejects.”
Is there anyone in society less ignored than blacks and gays? For real now. Who is this person kidding?
Ramsey went on to explain that “inclusion is not inherently good, and exclusion is not inherently bad.”
In other words: Inclusion is only good if whites and straight people are including minorities. Exclusion is fine if minorities are excluding whites and straight people. We’re 100% confident that Ramsey would agree with this definition of terms. After all, it’s been long established in left-wing academic circles (i.e. the kind of sociology that is popular on Tumblr) that there can never be such a thing as “reverse racism” because you have to be in power to be racist and only whites have societal power. Even when that plainly isn’t the case, it’s still the case. It’s a very convenient and tautological philosophy.
These people fail to understand that the deeper they dig themselves into their minority identities, the weaker their political aspirations become. By all means, though, have your little safe space and hate on white people. You’re only hurting yourselves.
