YOUR FAULT: Liberal Writer Turns on Democrats Who Didn’t Vote Hillary
Writing this weekend for the Chicago Enterprise-Record, Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Cynthia Tucker turned on the Bernie Sanders-loving liberals who didn’t show up to vote for Hillary Clinton in 2016, claiming it was their fault that we now have to live in the theocratic, evil, racist America of Donald Trump. After a week in which young Democrats were pumped about the first official “Democratic Socialist” defeating a major House incumbent in New York City, Tucker warned that their little socialist movement had brought America…duh duh duh…to the brink of destruction!
Oh man, this party is finished, baby.
Tucker is upset, of course, about the fact that Trump is getting ready to appoint a replacement for Justice Anthony Kennedy, who announced this month that he was calling it a career. Like most Democrats, she is worried sick that the freshly-conservative, constitutionalist Supreme Court may roll back some of these supposed “rights” that the more liberal court decided could be found in our nation’s founding document. Abortion, gay marriage, etc. Tucker and her liberal cohorts are coming face the face with the realization that, no, none of those “rights” have anything to do with the Constitution, and thus they may not fare so well when put before a Supreme Court that isn’t filled to the brim with judicial activists.
“That strongly suggests that for the rest of my life — and through a considerable part of my child’s adult life — the nation’s highest court will be a bastion of ultra-right doctrine, hostile to progressive causes of all sorts,” she writes. “That court will likely kill off reproductive rights, starve unions, look askance at affirmative action, eviscerate voting rights and abuse criminal defendants. It will coddle violent police officers, kowtow to corporations and re-write the First Amendment, bulldozing Thomas Jefferson’s famed ‘wall of separation between church and state.’”
After overhyping the destruction of America by approximately six thousand percent, Tucker goes on to say that it was Hillary Haters on the left who got the country into this mess.
“While the Trump-McConnell machine is taking all the credit for their victory, they had help from the left — from the #NeverHillary crowd,” she writes. “Progressive activists such as actress Susan Sarandon insisted that the Democratic nominee would be no better than Trump. Green Party nominee Jill Stein drained votes away from Clinton. Young progressive voters stayed away from the polls in the 2016 presidential election because they weren’t ‘energized’ by Clinton’s campaign. They helped put Trump in office, and they will reap what they have sown. So, unfortunately, will the rest of us.”
There is a certain amount of truth to what she’s saying, we suppose, but you can’t very well blame Democrat voters of any ideological bent for not being particularly thrilled by Hillary Clinton. What, they were supposed to just turn the other way when it came out that their nominee had essentially stolen the primary victory? Not give a damn that she was under federal investigation for much of 2016? Not mind that she was much more concerned about her personal fortunes than about the progressive agenda?
We can’t say we would have personally preferred Stein or Bernie Sanders, but hell, we understand why true-blue believers would have.
