Skyrocketing Crime Rates Has Gun Sales Setting All-Time Records

With protesters and even some elected Democrats getting behind the “Defund the Police” movement as crime rates soar beyond the stratosphere in several major American cities, the FBI reported this week that background checks have hit new all-time records. With the public beginning to fear that police will not be able to protect them from criminals and the ever-growing leftist mobs, it seems they are exercising their Second Amendment rights in an effort to make sure they and their families are prepared for the lawlessness.

“In July 2020, the FBI conducted more than 3.6 million firearm background checks, making it the third highest month on record for checks since the bureau began keeping statistics in 1998, according to new data released on Monday by the agency,” CNN reported. “By comparison, the bureau conducted just over 2 million checks in July 2019.”

July’s background checks follow March (3.74 million) and June (3.91 million) in signifying an enormous spike in gun sales. The March spike was undoubtedly due to the unprecedented coronavirus pandemic, which at one point seemed destined to cause a full-scale economic collapse.

The June and July numbers, however, are almost certainly due to the protests that followed the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Those protests, which have been characterized by widespread looting, arson, and other forms of destruction, have unnerved Americans even outside of major metropolitan areas. Especially when they hear tale of cities stripping their police departments of their budgets.

“Millions of Americans are discovering how important it is to have the right of self-defense amid the push to defund the police,” Fox News contributor Joey Jones said. “I’ve been to my local gun store. A good friend of mine, an Army Ranger, owns it and they’re always busy and there is nothing on the shelves. He has over a half a million dollars in inventory on backorder waiting to come in so he can sell it.”

Well, these are the seeds that Black Lives Matter and their cohorts are sowing. The truth of the matter is that one of the greatest advancements made by human civilization was to outsource violence to the state. This is, in many ways, what puts the “civilization” in our civilization: The rule of law and the men and women charged with enforcing it. We suppose it’s easy to overlook that when police have been around for our entire lives, but every-man-and-gun-for himself is not a scenario we want to return to. Particularly not if you actually care about the lives of black people.

But then, we’re far from convinced that the organizations spouting that line actually do.
