I should first note that I am vaccinated and believe that others should be vaccinated. I think it is the smart decision based on everything I have studied. I have received many vaccinations over my lifetime with no ill effect – tetanus, flu, shingles, polio, etc.
But I am totally against mask and vaccine mandates for the very reason that I am vaccinated. I do have some questions regarding the need for children to be vaccinated. The statistics are not as compelling as for adults – and especially seniors and even more especially for seniors with serious underlying conditions.
At the time I got my vaccination I declared – based on all the scientific evidence – the Pandemic was over … fini … for me. I believe the doctors and scientists who said that my chance of getting Covid was less than 5 percent. My chance of getting a serious case, less than that. My chance of requiring hospitalization even less. My chance of winding up in and ICU almost zero. And my chance of dying from Covid, statistically zero. Yes, there have been anecdotal cases, but not enough to rise to a statistic.
I was not a dedicated mask wearer even before I got the jab because of what the scientists said. I only wear a mask when required to do so – almost exclusively in medical facilities. Here in south Florida, I have not found a mask requirement or even a suggestion in any retail outlet, office, grocery stores or pharmacy.
But I am bombarded by all the fearmongering in the news media. We are told that there are too many cases … too many hospitals reaching capacity … and too many deaths. But that has nothing to do with me, 0r all those other vaccinated folks and those with natural immunity.
According to the scientists, between 80 and 90 percent of those who contract Covid are not vaccinated. That should come as no surprise since the vaccines are said to have a 95 percent efficacy – possibly dropping little. And the death rate among the vaccinated is close to zero.
So, what about all those folks getting terribly ill with Covid – and dying? To me, that is on them. Remember that virtually everyone dying of Covid has decided to take that risk. It is a disease spreading and inflicting those who chose to take the risk. They are spreading it to each other.
There were questions raised if the vaccinated folks could spread the Covid to others. The most recent studies say that the vaccinated are not spreaders to any major degree. And if we are, those getting the virus are those who decided to take the risk and not get vaccinated.
It does not seem sensible to shut down America – create Draconian mandates and regulations – to oppress the 70-plus percent of the population who are vaccinated just because 20-some percent of the population want to take the risk. I say it is a free country. Let them take the risk. Just do not punish us who are vaccinated and not likely to get Covid. To me it would be like having the police arrive at a crime scene and arrest the perpetrators AND all the witnesses.
Fortunately, I live in a state (Florida) that is not punishing those who are vaccinated as opposed to New York City that is locking down, locking up and oppressing the freedom of all its residents. Hmmm. Maybe that is why there are so many folks from New York City currently in Florida.
Maybe — just maybe – getting rid of all the destructive policies, like masking, distancing and vaccine passports – would actually encourage more folks to get vaccinated. If not, it’s their funeral.
So, there ‘tis.
