Kamala Moving Joe Aside for 2024 Run?
On the morning of the 2022 midterm elections, a new report from Politico’s Jonathan Martin stated that the 2024 presidential election has been “increasingly consuming” Vice President Kamala Harris and other Democrats eyeing the White House should President Joe Biden not seek re-election.
The article, titled “Biden’s and Trump’s Performances on the 2022 Trail Sow Doubts About 2024,” details the “reluctance” Democratic voters and politicians have about a Biden re-election bid in 2024, a year in which he will turn 82. There has been a smattering of reports in recent days that should Democrats lose both chambers of Congress Tuesday, Biden may face increased public pressure from members of his own party to step aside.
According to Politico, the topic of Biden’s possible succession “is increasingly consuming the would-be successors themselves, as well as their spouses. Doug Emhoff, the Second Gentleman, has told Democrats the party must rally around Harris should Biden not run.”
Polling has consistently shown that if Biden steps aside, Harris would begin a contested primary as the front-runner. Like many national reports on Harris, the Politico report contained insights from White House aides who don’t think very highly of her.
“Such talk, however, causes eye-rolling in the West Wing, where officials believe Harris is on stronger footing now than she was in her first year but remain skeptical about her viability in 2024,” the Politico report states.
The article also notes that “most Democratic lawmakers” have doubts about Harris, and when Democratic voters at Biden rallies were asked about which possible presidential candidates intrigued them, the most common names floated were California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
